Nobunaga wrote:... The patterns developing are the promotion of policy, the use of common entertainment media to promote the desires and intentions of government, while attacking those who question that policy, even private citizens. As popular and as wealthy as these men (Limbaugh, etc..) may be, they are not officials of any kind with any degree of government responsibility.

... But then, Limbaugh's show is, when you boil it down, entertainment, and he assaults other popular media on a daily basis, promotes candidates and policies he favors...

I was wondering after reading your first paragraph: How is the government capable of doing such a thing? Is the government really responsible or is this largely in the hands of major entertainment media figures like Rush Limbaugh?

Eh, hes just known to foe things. Not surprising really.

Ive considered the same thing many times, but I simply need new stories. Without the DVR technology, and the science channel, discovery etc, though, I could pass on it I think. But not on the movies. At this point though, it comes down to an exercise in trying to figure out where the writers are going with the story. It cant always be predicted, and many times is predictably unpredictable, but for those few gems of a twist out there, its almost worth sitting through the rest of it.

NCIS: I saw the ads for that. It looked so damn corny and silly. Then my sig other decided to start watching it. She's infinitely more intelligent than me, so I couldn't understand how she'd watch it. Then I watched it. I hate myself for loving it so much.

I pass on the LA one though. Except unlike the poster who didn't care for the little woman...I think she's the best actor on the show. Its really hard for me to see the girl with the birthmark in her eye too. It simply makes my eyes water. Its a weakness on my end undoubtedly, but I just cant get past it.

... My testes are fine, but thank you for the concern. Stalin made a very valid point and as comparisons can be drawn between any television show meant to entertain and talk radio, my argument fell apart.

I've been watching reruns of Boston Legal. The first season was excellent. The second season is getting mired in ridiculous scenes that are not really funny and some sort of political agenda-making. One character is a ridiculous arch-conservative (for example, he shoots a child rapist in the kneecaps; the next episode he shoots a homeless person with a paintball gun). The characters that are not ridiculous arch-conservatives are intelligent, well-spoken liberals who make statements such as "there are 37 million in the US living below the poverty line." (a true statement for all intents and purposes).

Now, normally this does not bother me. However, it has taken away enjoyment of the show. We are getting a dose of political propaganda and unfunny ridiculousness.

A show that handled the political well was The West Wing. With some limited exceptions, Republicans were not ridiculous characters, which I enjoyed. It added to the show's overall quality to have thoughtful Republican characters.

In any event, I have no problem with political propaganda in TV shows because I'm not easily swayed by what I see on a fictional television show. That being said, the only thing that really bothered me was MTV's political propaganda pieces, which I saw as both tasteless and ridiculous.

I do hope that people realize that these shows are written by writers, who are typically very creative, and its not unreasonable to assume that while there probably is some agenda pushing going on, that some of it is actually to: one: just jump on the bandwagon and seem current, two: push their agenda or point of view, and three: exercise their right to creative license.

Without a doubt there may be other factors, such as advertising concerns and network politics concerning politics, but in the end, its just a story, and anyone swayed by an episode of Boston Legal, probably isnt much of a concern to the topic in the first place.

Its like people watching stargate, and believing the stargates exist....Im sure it happens...but really, who cares if it does.

The one agenda that did annoy me above all others...and this will strike a nerve...was the use of the hobbits smoking those pipes most conspicuously. It is not at all hard to imagine that the goal was to perhaps foster an atmosphere of "smoking is ok", and its reasonable to assume it was the only reason to include a scene that hardly contributed to the plot line.

I personally detest all gratuitous displays of smoking in movies and shows, and while some are absolutely necessary for realism, I think its safe to say that many are without a doubt product placements with an agenda of their own. I am somewhat more biased, having had my Mom die of lung cancer...and considering my biggest failing in life will have been, not getting her to stop, and not devoting my life to the eradication of the cancer sticks once and for all. On most subjects, I will always consider the other side of the topic, but on this one, I refuse to even consider it.

You're not responsible for her decisions.
