Come Help My Daughter Get Her Clarinet For Christmas

Hello,

I posted a length post on my blog (HERE) about my daughter and her gifting and about working on raising the money for her new Clarinet (HERE). The long and the short of it is that her new Clarinet costs almost $3,200 and we have been able to pay for almost $2,300 bringing the remaining down to $900. At the time that put the Clarinet on layaway at the local music store, I was working a ton of overtime and it seemed like purchasing this would be mere weeks away. However, just two weeks into the layaway my company cut all overtime making me unable to put any real amounts on the layaway (at this rate it would be another 9 months before I would get it off). My church took up a special offering for her and she received almost $750 towards it and that was awesome and I praise God. However, since then, it has just been heartbreaking as her father to see the end so close and yet not be able to get it off. But that is not the biggest heartbreaker. I gave my word to my daughter (perhaps not the best thing but all you fathers will understand) back when we put this on layaway in August that she would have it by the latest Christmas day. Originally I was supposed to be working overtime through November. Now she has been great and only asks about it once a week to once every two weeks. She has been waiting patiently and a really great daughter about the whole thing. But I am sitting here wanting to see her have it before Christmas.

So, I am asking everyone here to please think and/or pray about donating to help me get Katie's Clarinet off of layaway. Any amount would help. And I have set up a paypal account for this. You can easily donate to help me make my daughter's Christmas.

Thanks for everyones at least taking the time to read this and I will keep you posted. Also, in about a week (give or take), I will post some videos of Katie playing so that everyone can enjoy and see what they are donating into on THIS blog.

And keep it coming. Katie is still a ways from her goal, but has received money from the coolest of sources like a person from the UK. With each donation, she gets more and more excited. I would tape that and post it but I have been warned to not do so or else she would, well, be mad at dad.

Not to be a devils advocate here but have you thought about using the money you already have paid in for a cheaper Clarinet? I mean, $3200.00 is a lot of money for a clarinet. That could help feed a lot of children who's parents have lost their jobs.

I'm just sayin is all....

Could she use a cheaper clarinet, yes. She could use any clarinet. The reason she is going for this one is because it is the perfect match between her level of play and the right instrument. There are actually some clarinets they had there that were more money. The way we approached this was that since she has talent, let's get her band director (is a clarinet player) and private lessons instructor together to help us find the right instrument. Otherwise, I wouldn't know one from another.

As far as could the money be used to feed a lot of children. The answer is yes. However, let me put this out there. My daughter does a lot of community service including working with her school and our church to reach, help, cook, and serve meals to homeless people and the abused and battered women's shelter in Fort Worth (who take in kids as well). And that does not even count her playing in fund raisers. Could we do more, who couldn't.

Maybe I am being selfish. Obviously, I don't think so because we do reach out. Could I be wrong, I guess so. I hope that at least answers your question.

My old Stradivarius trombone cost somewhere in the two thousands. Kind of ridiculous how much they charge for those things (especially cuz I ended up preferring my crappy jazz/marching horn from 5th grade).

Im sorry but I just dont get this , asking strangers for cash to buy your daughter an expensive Xmas present Charity is a noble thing, I have even been known to put my hand in my own pocket from time to time, but there are a million better causes than this my friend. Its unfortunate that your hoped for overtime didn't materialise, its a shame that your daughter will have to wait a while longer for her gift, but its hardly life or death , if its tearing you up that much then a small bank loan will do the trick surely.
Its ironic that I am called a pinko, socialist, liberal on this forum every ten minutes or so yet would never dream of advocating handouts on grounds as undeserving as this, desire does not equate with hardship in my book.

Thank you for your comments. I completely understand and if you do not want to help or send your money elsewhere that is fine.

But look at it from another perspective. Everyone wants to know that where they spend/send their money has some kind of return. That return could come from knowing that you helped a homeless man have a meal or that some child in an impoverish country will have a meal. It might simply be the good feeling from giving to a needy cause. No matter what it is, we seek some kind of return. In my daughters case, you are correct in that she doesn't have cancer or is going hungry or something along those lines, and chances are she would have the clarinet in the next 20 months or so (or whatever it works out to be) anyway.

But what I am asking is that you help make a teenage girls dreams of having this clarinet come true. I am asking that help make my dream of having this in her hands by Christmas come true. I am asking you to show my daughter that the human spirit believes and cares and will strive above the junk we see in our world to provide hope and help. It is like Santa giving Susan Walker (Miracle on 34th Street) the house she wanted. Could her mom eventually afford it, sure thing. But there is something special that touches the heart when we make a child's dream come true that gives us almost immediate tangible returns on our giving because it in many ways becomes a miracle that we were part of.

If that does move you to give, I completely understand and just thank you for reading.

I agree the prices are ridiculus and there were some that they have that cost more (at least sticker price not sure what they would sell it for).
