Life incarceration is cheaper, more fair, does not involve arbitrarily deciding who lives and dies, and allows for the correction of a false verdict.

As jay is fond of saying... the debate is over. :P

That may be true, but it is mainly due to the supreme court hearing all of these cases. First, they will hear appeals based on disputed evidence. While I'm all for the justice system, I do find it highly redundant in the constant rehearing of cases for each technicality. I believe that the appeal should take all of these into consideration and present 1 appeal for that. Alas, that is not the case.

Now, if we were to have 1 firm appeals process instead of what amounts to stall tactics, then I would argue that the death penalty is cheaper.

Sure. Not giving them any appeals process would be even cheaper. However there is a very good reason there is an appeals process in place and why it's the way it is. It's so innocents aren't wrongfully put to death and gross misjudgements aren't carried out.

The whole system is actually very sensible for preventing innocent people to die (though there are still innocents who die) but that comes at the price of not actually being cheap.

I mean, you can argue that limiting the options people on deathrow have (which would result in more innocent people dying) or you could argue that there are other reasons than money to convict people to death but I'd say you're better off going with the latter.

I guess we forgot about Jack the Ripper. He was such a lovely fellow and he didn't need a gun. Man has been killing man for a long time even before borders were drawn up. And even in todays society you are going to find people who are just bad to the bone and don't give a shit about life. I say pound of flesh for a pound of flesh.

I'm not saying we're limiting the options, but clearly the tactics used by some of the defense lawyers are clearly aimed at prolonging their clients life. While I agree, innocent people are wrongly put to death, would it be any better if they were wrongly imprisoned for life?

Here's the way I see it. We have procedural errors in how the trial is run (biased jury, witness tampering, etc.) and we have problems with evidence (anecdotal/faulty, tests misread, etc.) I think that all the procedural errors that the defense can muster be considered by the supreme court. Then, all the problems with evidence that can be found can separately be presented. Thus, we give the defendant due process without wanton abuse of the legal system. After years of going over the same case with new problems, I would think this would cause the justices to become jaded and unsympathetic to those with legitimate concerns. By streamlining the process and giving each case two opportunities to cast doubt, this would preserve the appeals process while allow the justices to hear all the cases in a timely manner and with an open mind.

Hell yeah. I'm thinking a giant, 30ft diameter, red hot, hamster wheel type cheese grater doing about 3 rpm. Feet first, paper-thin slices.....pay-per-view(proceeds going to the families).

On an even more serious note, the appeals process is necessary only in cases where there aren't any eye-witnesses. In the case of the Fort Hood guy,...straight to the cheese grater.

Yes, good riddance. After all, a society that murders is totally different from a person who murders. It's not barbaric, or arcane in the least.

Really. The same crowd that is so anti-killing killers is all for killing those who would kill killers. Amazing.

How about jail him for life but once a week a family member of one of his victims gets to "visit" with him for an hour?

Way to stereotype... just because one guy makes an ironic statement doesn't automatically mean all those anti-killing killers are all for killing those who would kill killers. You obviously know that.

Just curious Luns, are you agreeing with Colton that you are glad he's dead? Doesn't that contradict what Jesus and the bible teach about murder?
