Chimpanzee Business
The woman who was attacked by that chimpanzee in Connecticut was apparently on Oprah today, revealing her face in public for the first time. I'm not going to embed the images here. Don't follow the link if you've got a weak stomach.

I don't mean to be a giant asshole or anything... but with the amount of medical/surgical/cosmetic technology we have available that's the best they could do? Does this have anything to do with her insurance coverage stating that more intricate work would be deemed 'cosmetic' and therefore they don't cover it?

I think it also partly has something to do with how badshit crazy and strong apes are.
Seriously, ripped her face out. Surgery can only repair, not restore.

This doesn't really resemble 'repair'... it looks more like 'gave up'. At least shape it like a face again...
Didn't some woman have a face transplant? Hold on... I'll find it.
Well, looking through face transplant "before-and-afters" it seems to pretty much be the norm to look similar to that afterwards, though (at least in the images I found through google) at least resembling the human face.

There may be reasons as to why they couldn't do that unrelated to money though. Plastic surgery is quite difficult and what you want isn't always what you can get.

Hm, who knows. She is in Cleveland where the other surgery happened so perhaps it may happen in the future.
On a slightly more morbid note: I would not want to live in her condition. If the injuries didn't kill me, I would have actively refused treatment (as my living will and directive does not cover this sort of thing 'note to self'), as the quality of life in her situation is pretty terrible. Her resilience is impressive and touching, I just wouldn't have it in me for many reasons.

It ripped her hands off too.
There is no mention of them being reattached.

I hadn't heard about this. Being the lazy ass I am, rather than Googling, I'll just ask...was this at a zoo or something? How'd she get in contact with the chimp?

So either the ape went apeshit for no reason, or she really pissed it off for it to have mauled her like that.

Adult chimps are quite territorial and aggressive. They're only cute and playful as children. Plus, they're incredibly strong. By age 5 an average chimp can overpower an average adult human male.
As far as I understand, an adult chimp is about 5 times stronger than a human of the same weight. So if a 150 lb human can lift 200 lbs, a 150 lb chimp can lift 1000 lbs.
That woman probably weighs about 160-170 lbs, and the chimp likely weighed 300 lbs (maybe more), meaning that's basically like an adult man tearing up a newborn.

If this one was kept as a pet, you would think it would have been socialized so it wouldn't be so aggressive.

Re: Chimpanzee Business
Depends on where and how the chimp was raised. If born and bred in captivity, especially to be a pet, then it should have been socialized (not trained, just to get use to other people outside of it's immediate home). If it was captured in the wild or came from a zoo, then it should not have been a pet in the first place.
