Scandinavia [New Map]
[bigimg]http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3769/scandanavia.jpg[/bigimg]
The Idea:
I've wanted to have a map of Sweden around for a while now, and seeing as Sweden is a bad shape for a map, Scandinavia fits much more easily. The look is inspired by the Iceland map, but the layout will be similar to the Scandinavia map in the Recycling Bin.
And the Ukraine map is not getting enough comments for me to actually work on it much or for it to progress through the foundry.
Gameplay:
Build your own bonus, like the Berlin map. Would this work with only thee bonus regions? It's a far shot. I know I'm probably going to have to split the countries up. (I was just trying to keep away from copying the previous attempt at Scandinavia.)
Previous Versions:
To Do:
- Draw territories, add names etc.
- Put something in the space below the title. I was thinking flags, but that would be the same as the other map...
- Add a Legend in the lower right corner

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
Very very Iceland-esque, down to the style for the title, the font and coloring of the credits, and the rest of the map. Not sure if it's too much; personally I don't think so, but maybe you could verge off the trail slightly—color scheme for the land revolving around a more white / light grayscale?
There's a weird bit of red under south Finland, but there's not much else to say at this stage besides the fact it looks sweet.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
You could also incorporate Denmark which was an influence and basically one of the Scandinavian countries along with Murmansk - lenningrad areas. If ya want to enlarge.
Nice start. Cool graphics thus far.

Excellent start. Do you plan to include non playable land in a gray color? I always prefer that look over floating land masses.

I agree, and was just about to say that.
Even if you then cover it up with the legend, it would still be better to have them. Provide a little context, ya know? We can't have people thinking scandanavia is an island now, can we?

I got rid of them
, but alright I'll go put them back. Does anyone else think the map is too much like Iceland? (that was kind of my original goal, it looks so pretty...)

It doesn't look too much like Iceland, since they are both nordic regions and they should look similar.

Nice start.
No, it doesn't look like iceland...indeed I think it's just different in appearance for the moment.
Agree with others about non playable lands.
Currently it isn't so easy to comment on the map due its lack of important elements like the legend and the territories borders.
I'm going to move the map, I hope for a very short period of time, in the ideas subforum (most appropriate for the current state of production).
As soon as the map will follow the guidelines listed below I'll be happy to move your thread in the drafting room

Drafting Room Guidelines
To be considered a Working Draft a project must be more than just an idea; a Draft should have a clear thematic focus, a plan for how the gameplay will work, and a basic image which should include:1. Territory Labels - temporary names or numbers will suffice, and are always open to change.
Draft images should not be larger than 630x600px (small image) or 840x800px (large image).
2. Borders/Paths/Impassables - it should be made clear where territories do/do not connect.
3. Bonus Areas - where combinations/groups of territories will award a bonus, this should be indicated on the map.
4. Legend - speculative bonus values and explanations of any attack rules or gameplay features.
Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
As a small remark, I would like to point out that Denmark is counted as a part of Scandinavia.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
Two questions before I put too much work into this...
1. Does anyone feel insulted that Denmark is not on the map? Because, personally, I'd rather keep it off the map.
- We have a map of Denmark in development, but not of the countries currently on the map
- Adding Denmark would Shrink the rest of the map to fit it in
- Denmark adds only 3-4 territories in a corner, but it reduces the space I have to work with for everything else, seeing as it would make the gigantic space on the bottom right larger
- It's mostly Islands, and I've gotten rid of them so far
2. Take a look at the coast of Norway. Compare it with Sweden and Finland. Looks better, but it takes a whole lot of work. Should I do the same for Sweden and Finland, or not?
- My main concern here is that it will all be covered up/have to be make less visible so that the names and army circles don't cover it.

Agree
If you want to develope a geographical map it's ok, infact Danmark is not a part of Scandinavian Peninsula (Norway, Sweden and North Finland).
But if you want to represent the "cultural area" you have to include the danemark too (without considering number of territories etc etc)

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
You wouldn't have to go into great detail on the islands/coast.
No need to include Denmark but certainly attach it to Russia. You could even utilize the Russian areas for terts if need be.
Love the colors. Not dull at all.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
The thing that jumps out first, is all of that beautiful detail. Try messin around with the transfer modes on the color overlay, see if you can pull even more detail out. Don't over do on any embellishments that would take away or diminish the detail. The coloring is all wrong the way it is washing the map out. Once you get that worked out, it should spring to life. Very good start. I will keep an eye on this one.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
Nice! You should add Karelia, at the southeast of finland, and Åland, the small island between southern finland and sweden. Adding Åland would also add an attack route between southern Finland and Sweden... otherwise south finland would be a bit isolated.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
I am a dane, and though I wouldn't say that I feel insulted, that Denmark is excluded, I think it IS a rather big mistake. But first, I would like to point out, that a maybe even bigger mistake is, that Finland is included, though it is actually NOT part of Scandinavia.
Now: Scandinavia consists of (only) Denmark, Sweden and Norway. These three countries are much alike in many aspects - most importantly language. Us scandinaves pretty much understand all of each other. Finland is a whole other matter. Both culturally and language-wise, it's far from Scandinavia.
I think it's wrong to exclude Denmark, because Denmark is historically, a very important part of Scandinavia, as it was all ruled by the Danish monarch once. I don't wanna get all proud and stuff, and by beef ain't that "Uhh Denmark is left out", my beef is simply: "That is NOT Scandinavia!" It'd be like having a map of USA displaying Mexico and ony the adjacent States of USA.
I say: Call the map something else, or make it the real Scandinavia.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
Oh, and someone mentioned the Scandinavian peninsula: That is ONLY consisting of (most of) Sweden and Norway; No Finland here either; Finland is what makes it a peninsula, but is not a part of it.
There are alot of strange definitions of Scandinavia floating around the world, but I think every Scandinave agrees: Scandinavia IS: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Spend some time in these countries and the neighboring ones, and you'll understand why! We are brothers, so to say! Alot confuses Scandinavia with The Nordic Countries, which also includes Finland and Iceland, but any other definition of Scandinavia than the one mentioned is a result of other, bigger nations making mistakes, which over time have spread.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
(OK, I see the guy wrote "northern part of Finland" as a part of the peninsula. I'll give him that. It's all about where you cut off - wiki has it as just Sweden and Norway, but I would agree: there's a little Finland there. But this map is definately way more than the scandinavian peninsula, and I would suggest naming the map "The Scandinavian Peninsula", if that is the objective, as that is very different from Scandinavia.)

I am of mixed swedish/norwegian/finnish descent but I still have to agree; Finland is not considered Scandinavia in any of the Nordic countries (including Finland).
Only a very tiny part of Finland is considered belonging to geographical scandinavia..
Finland is a whole other matter. Both culturally and language-wise, it's far from Scandinavia.
well.. it was part of sweden for almost 600 years and therefore also part of the kalmar union so that argument is a bit off...
anyway.. You are right that Denmark should be in and Finland out if it´s supposed to be Scandinavia.. tis not Denmarks fault they were kicked out of the peninsula.
(it´s France´s fault - they gave Sweden money so they could crush the Holy roman empire and after that we.. ehrmm the swedish empire.. just became too strong.)
yes.. true scandinavians are brothers/rivals going back more than a thousand years and it wont be a scandinavian map without denmark, who in a way is the oldest brother who just happened to get the short end of the stick.
The comet cometh!
Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
I'm glad you agree.
Just a couple of things though. It's not France's fault, that Denmark isn't part of the peninsula. Peninsula is a geographical term. It's not like Sweden took the money from France and dug the canal betwen Denmark and Sweden.
About Finland being in the Kalmar union. True Sweden was a bit bigger then stretching over what is now Finland. Also Denmark stretched into what is now Germany. They even controlled large part of the british islands back in the good ol' days. There are still parts of Finland today, where they speak (sort of) swedish, but the bigger part of Finland IS VERY different from any scandinavian language/culture. I think Finland should be considered more occupied by Sweden than actually part of it. Later on the Swedish king actually got lots of Poland, Germany and what not. That's not Scandi either. Hell Sweden kicked Denmark so hard, we barely had one city left at one point. That's why it's always great fun to battle swedes in sports now. Them crazy ass swedes.
That was a lot of rambling. I basically just agree with ya.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
Personally, I'd like to see a map with all the nordic countries, including denmark and iceland. Then you could just call it "nordic countries" instead of scandinavia, or something...

I was talking about Skåne and Halland (and Blekinge as well I think) being Danish from around 980 until the late 1600:s.. that´s almost 700 years.. twice as long as it has been swedish..
..and in the danish peace treaty with Charlemagne 1200 years ago, one of the danes is "Osfrid from Schonen" so it´s definitely a danish homeland.
Also Denmark stretched into what is now Germany. They even controlled large part of the british islands back in the good ol' days.
and norway and skåne..
Two years ago I tried to make a huge map that included Cnut´s viking empire; norway, denmark, skåne and england.. around 1025-30 ad
never posted it because it looked like the gameplay would have sucked - maybe I should try again, I have it on an old external harddrive.
and yes we need a nordic map..

Ahh yeah... Doh! I feel studip for not making that connection.
(And yes... Blekinge as well. Small "län", but beautiful.)
Anyway... we're getting of topic. I think the last few posts could be summed up like this:
Scandinavia is Denmark, Norway and Sweden and nothing else.
The Nordic Countries are Scandinavia, Finland and Iceland and nothing else.
The Scandinavian peninsula is: Norway, (most of) Sweden and a very small part of Finland and nothing else.
I think that way too many maps on this site has Scandinavia all fucked up. So I think it would be about time to set the record straight. The more I think about it: Yes, I feel STRONGLY about Scandinavia being mapped incorrectly.

Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
really great, but my opinion is to have 4 areas worth extra troops, perhaps you could split one of them into northern and southern?
Re: Scandinavia [New Map]
There was a really sweet draft of Scandinavia a while back - I think it was called "Scandinavia Rex" or something... the person doing it was called something like "cool cat"... It's a shame that stalled - it'll be in the recycling bin if you wanted to have a look at it - it was pretty darn good...
