Ok that's me out of this thread. Basically every pro-American post in the last few pages has proved a big point - if you can't see it then go about your life with your head in the sand. I'm not even gonna bother to respond to all the stupid bullshit you've all written to be honest. Was trying to keep it political, sensible and bring in some genuine scholarly criticisms but apparently it just ends up as shouting. Would have hoped someone would have tried to argue the pro-American side logically. I actually think I could, and there are plenty of scholars who would agree with you if you just get off your arse and educate yourself. If people came back with democratic peace theory, Kant, Doyle and all that then I would have been happy enough. I did give you all a few hints in naming a few writers but no... ignorant ranting is the best defence apparently.

Iraq would be safer - Saddam kept out militants as they were a threat to him. Iraqis are getting killed much more frequently and in higher numbers now he's gone, the public services are still knackered from the invasion, and US troops were recently shown to be doing bugger all training of Iraqi local forces (a news report showing them filming the beating of innocents in sectarian violence, rather than teaching the police "no, dont kick the shit out of who you dont like, just the bad guys"). Oh, and all this bloody shambles has done is take scared people, who would once have viewed the US as liberators, and recruited them into terrorist groups, as what litle they ever had has been taken from them.

You should have prefaced this with “except for the Kurds”
To be perfectly honest, Iraq would be better split in 3 - the shias, sunnis, and kurds all live in reasonably distinct parts of the country, and all want their own state, but not to be ruled by or work with either of the other two.
However, no US administration would make getting their oil that much harder (3 nations to deal with, rather than one), and Iran and Turkey would be less than impressed at the recreation of Kurdistan.
Then again, Poland was reborn after WWI..........
