In short, health care reform, as currently envisioned by Democratic leaders, would be built on the foundation of an expanded and more intrusive IRS.
Under the various proposals now on the table, the IRS would become the main agency for determining who has an "acceptable" health insurance plan; for finding and punishing those who don't have such a plan; for subsidizing individual health insurance costs through the issuance of a tax credits; and for enforcing the rules on those who attempt to opt out, abuse, or game the system. A substantial portion of H.R. 3200, the House health care bill, is devoted to amending the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 in order to give the IRS the authority to perform these new duties.

No I was just pointing out that tax is not evil, it is in fact good. I said nothing about being like them (though come to mention it, it's not a bad idea). No-one likes being taxed, but no-one likes driving on dirt roads or dying because they can't afford to get medical attention either. So much of your country is nationalised, what's the big scare over health?

The countries I mentioned, as well as many others, have government health care. It works, it's not perfect but it works. People live longer, infant mortality rates are less etc etc. These are indisputable facts. Your country does not love you when it comes to health - it makes more money by not treating you than it ever will by treating you. As long as $$$ drives health, you are screwed. I get better health care in Turkey than you do in the states (I lived in the US for 6 months and went to a hospital there), are you proud of that, leader of the free world?

I don't expect to change your mind as it's quite clear you and GabonX are just going to continue with unfounded right-wing attacks. I guess you may even convince some people, if they can't be bothered to investigate for themselves. So true. Many reasons why the US government is not effective. Firstly, there is so little trust in it. Here in Europe the government in trusted, but scrutinised so that any money that is spent is spent properly. Also the US government is too corporatist and its congress is all in the pockets of the rich, so there is no incentive to actually run government as it should be.

2) We are not forcing anything on anyone, you can keep your doctor and your insurance, if you are lucky enough to have good insurance.
