The book Rambo is a masterpiece. The movie was good but compared to the book it missed the real conflict between John Rambo and the police guy (tesel?). Hamburger Hill was a good movie and surprised it slipped my mind :s

gdeangel wrote:It's concerns the Vietnam war in a tangential way, but some mention should be given to Jacobs Ladder. There are very few movies that deal with psychological post-war afflictions, and in fact, if you look at it going back to the Novel, Rambo is really about a guy with PTSD... they just turned it into a comic franchise to turn a quick buck.

Also, not a cinematic masterpiece, but one you could really feel the "worms eye view" of the fighting was Hamburger Hill.

And I think "We Were Soldiers" has some underrated dialogue, like the following:
Col: I think you oughta get yourself an M-16.
Sgt Mjr: Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground.

... tell me, who else but Sam Eliot could pull of that line today.

[that would be refocusing the thread BTW]

Or what do you think of this one:

''Sergeant Savage: Beautiful morning, Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Plumley: What are you, a fuckin' weatherman now? ''

it's a hard pick. not between good morning vietnam and born on the 4th but between the rest. they're all so different. but i love Full Metal Jacket the best. it show's the insanity and piontlessness so well. and i love the soundtrack and the battle in wei city.
my dad, who was in the war, hated the real good morning vietnam guy.

Of course, the supposedly best Vietnam movie of all time and space was "Home in a Body Bag"

Anyone get the reference?

No, that's half the point. He spelt it "alter". Because he's an illiterate simpleton.

WTF was with the start of Full Metal Jacket? The part in training had no relevance to the film, did it?

Nam's Angels

Some bikers are hired by the CIA during the Vietnam War to rescue a captured agent from the clutches of the Red Chinese army. After a round of drinking, fighting, and whoring around, the cycle gang, led by Big Bill Smith, fix up their Yamahas with machine guns, grenades and armor plating, and storm the enemy camp.

A 5 star classic!!

I think it's a toss up between Platoon, Apocolypse Now and Deer Hunter...
but you've overlooked Gump which showed both sides of the war.

What Searching For Private Ryan did with the D-Day Invasion on the beaches of France
Platoon did with the Vietnam War experience... It really took you there.

Where you from private?
Texas, sir!
Texas eh? Only two things come from Texas, steers and queers, and I sure as hell don't see no horns on you private.

And We Were Soldiers is by far the best 'Nam film.

I bet you're the kind of guy that would f*ck a person in the ass and not even have the god damn common courtesy to give him a reach around. I'll be watching you.

Bullet in the Head. John Woo's masterpiece depicting the corruption of the South Veitnamese government.
(I also agree 84 Charlie Mopic is class).
From the list - Apocalypse now easily the best.
