That'd be funny if I were jewish, and 13, but since I'm 30, and not Jewish, it really doesn't make much sense

We are proud of our country, and we'll let the whole world know it. Don't tell me the US doesn't contribute. We contribute more than any other country is even capable, and if your country ever suffers a calamity of some kind, we'll be right there to help in your time of need. If a tidal wave wiped out the eastern seaboard of the US, killing millions, how many countries would send help for us?

That really doesn't wash I'm afraid, for a number of reasons:

Firstly, US aid is pretty much tied to foreign policy activity: Look at how much aid you've provided to Palestine recently...

Secondly, you don't seem to be able to manage your own problems that well - Katrina - so I don't think its too justified to claim superiority for looking after the rest of the world.

Thirdly, and most importantly, the US contribution to global development and aid is TINY compared to pretty much every other western country. Take a look at this website: http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Debt/USAid.asp for a detailed summary. I've taken the liberty to post the chart we're mainly concerned with here, however, as I;m almost 100% sure your not going to bother to educate yourself and take off those blinkers:
Image

That chart shows the overall aid contribution as a percentage of national income.

Also, thats a lovely jacket...

Erm... I'm an Atheist... and how does the fact that Arab nations don't contribute much aid mean that America shouldn't? What happened to that Christian charitable spirit and turning the other cheek that Jamie was talking about a minute ago?

With a Masters in World History, with a focus in Military History, I can tell you this is utter bullshit. The Diebner Atomic Bomb never made it past a little 1 kiloton party popper.

How would history have turned out if that had happened.

Considering that it didn't, and it wouldn't have, it's nothing but pure speculation with no basis in reality.

Whenever there is a disaster somewhere in the world, even in a hostile country, who's the first to render aid, the UNITED STATES of AMERICA.

*rolls eyes*

After 9/11 the Iranians were dancing in the street CELEBRATING the deaths of 3,000 men, women, and children, simply because they were christian Americans. A few months later, when Iran suffered through an earthquake that killed 20,000 Iranians, we didn't celebrate, or gloat, or rejoice in the deaths of 20,000 muslims. Actually, the Red Crescent (the Moslem counterpart to the Red Cross) responded in Iran. Moreover, the Red Cross is not a purely American organization, it's international. Granted, there is an American branch of the Red Cross, but that does not equate the Red Cross as being American by pure composition.

If a tidal wave wiped out the eastern seaboard of the US, killing millions, how many countries would send help for us?

Who cares?

I'd be quite happy for America not to be the hand that feeds me to be honest. A single hegemonic state in the world with no balance of power is a scary prospect.

That chart shows the overall aid contribution as a percentage of national income.

Percentage of national income. That says it all. The US is one of the richest if not thge richest country in the world. So in actual dollar amounts, the US gives more. Perhaps if the US didn't spend 200 Billion a year on NASA, and 200 Billion more on our military budget we could give a higher percentage, but still the US gives alot of money to relief efforts across the globe. While I'm thinking about it, how is that Somolia, and Ethiopia, two muslim countries with no resources, whos entire populations are starving to death has enough money to buy warplanes, and attack eachother with them, and what reason would they have to attack eachother?

How does a fluctuation from NASA funds to Military funds enable us to give more money?

While I'm thinking about it, how is that Somolia, and Ethiopia, two muslim countries with no resources, whos entire populations are starving to death has enough money to buy warplanes, and attack eachother with them, and what reason would they have to attack eachother?

Actually, Ethiopia is a predominately Christian composed nation, and hasn't experienced major economic or agricultural hardship for over a decade. Secondly, Somalia is not so much a state in itself, but rather a conglomeration of local warlords, on one side being the secular UN backed warlords, and the other the Muslim warlords. To say that Somalia would spend it's money on war machines then agriculture is a grave intellectual injustice, considering that there is no central government, and most of what is purchased and sold occurs through private transactions.

You really need to stop writing out shit that has absolutely no factual value.

Yeah, you tell him. Damn Communists with their lar-de-dar vocabulary and their accurate use of grammar, spelling and punctuation. They will try anything and everything to undermine that great country of yours.

Why don't you throw in a couple of f*ck you's and really tell him where it's at.
