Re: le tour de France

Post by DAZMCFC »

right yesterdays stage was won by Cyril Dessell. the main thing about this stage is it went over the highest road in Europe (2800m and odd).

the youngest man in the tour this year was the first over the top(some ride). he is 21 year old John-Lee Augustyne from South Africa. he had like a 10 secs lead, so it was not long before they caught him up on the way down. when they caught him he tried to follow their line. bad mistake as being a novice to these slopes and Le Tour he went crashing down a hill. luckily for him, it was only shail and he slid down about 30ft(his bike went a lot further). a spectator went down to help him up the hill, where he had to wait for his team car and a new bike. :D other parts of the ascent there was 20ft sheer drops.

today Stage was the monster stage, 3 massive Mountains. the last was the smallest, but the most severe with it's steepness (8% grade all the way up for 14KMs). Alpe D'Huez is famous for it's explosives attacks on the steep climb. this is where a few years ago Lance Armstrong(American) destoyed Jan Ulrich(German).

Todays winner Carlos Sastre, attacked from the bottom of the Mountain. he had 2 team mates in the group behind. Frank and Andy Shleck(Frank the wearer of the Yellow Jersey).the favourite Cadel Evans was also with these 2 and 6 other main rivals towards the end of the stage. Sastre is now the race leader and wears Yellow Jersey for tomorrow.

the last Indiviual Time Trial is in a couple of days time. now Cadel Evans knows he is faster than Sastre and Frank Shleck, but the big question is, is he fast enough as Sastre holds a lead of 1min 24secs. experts are saying Evans is about that time quicker(from past time trials).

Alpe D'Huez... I couldn't even imagine the pain of riding up it.

Andy Shleck owned that mountain today, I think he put in a better effort than even Sastre. No-one could get away from him today. Imagine him in a few years, with a few riders to carry him through the flat stages. He is going to be a real GC contender.

i agree with you there, no doubt about that.

the 19th Stage today was won by Sylvain Chavenel, he broke away with 85KM to go with Jeremy Roy.

Time Trial tomorrow, this will sort out who wins the tour.

Results of the Time Trial:
1. Stefan Schumacher(Ger)
2. Fabian Cancellara(Swi)
3. Kim Kirchen(Lux)
4. Christain Vandevelde(USA)
5. David Millar(GBR)

Schumacher, who won the 1st time trial was not expected to win this one, but it proves it was no fluke he won the 1st by winning this one.

as for the main guys, Franck Shleck had a nightmare and fell from 2nd(GC) to 6th.
Cadel Evans only managed to pull back 29 secs, instead of the 1mn 34secs he was expected to do. he was not on his game today. Sastre gave the time trial of his life and will win Le Tour tomorrow.

Overall Standings:
1. Carlos Sastre(Spa)
2. Cadel Evans(Aus) 1min 5secs
3. Bernard Kohl(Aust) 1min 20secs
4. Denis Menchov(Rus) 2min
5. Christian Vandevelde(USA) 3min 12secs

Team CSC(Denmark) will win the team event.
Bernard Kohl(Aust) will win the Polka Dot Jersey(Mountains).
Oscar Freire(Spa) will win the Green Jersey(most consistent, usually sprinters).
Andy Schlek(Lux) will win the White Jersey( young rider, under 23).

Is it possible that team CSC did this on purpose, so Sastre would have a carrot dangling in front of him on the trial. When you can see the person ahead of you it encourages you to ride harder to catch them. Did Frank shleck ride poorly so Sastre would win the overall classification??

that might be a case, but having said that, when he caught him he rode passed him and you have to be 25metres behind if you're caught.

anyway on the Champs Eleysees it was won by Geert Steegmans(Bel) the 1st stage win for team Quick-Step(Bel) on this tour.

see you next year.

well it's back. Cancellara won the opening time trial, with Britains Bradley Wiggins finishing 3rd. Alberto Contador is the bookies favourite and coming 2nd in the prolog doesn't change that.

a chance for Mark Cavendish to win his first stage this year after his incredible 4 stage wins last year. =D>

anyway going to watch the last 10k live on itv 4.

yes Mark Cavendish 2 stage wins in a row. Team Columbia were shit-hot in Yesterdays stage. the cross wins were very tricky, they got to a sharp corner in the road and created a large enough gap to keep and lengthen to 41 secs. Lance armstrong used his experience to be in the right place at the right time and quite a lot of the GC(general classification) riders got caught out including race favourite Alberto Contador and Aussie Cadel Evans.

it's the Team stage today, i'll be watching the highlights at 7pm(BST) on ITV 4. Team Astana with Armstrong, Contador and Klodden(9 in each team, 1st 6 or 7 count) in it are favourites for this stange, but there are a few strong teams this year.

Team Time Trial:

1. Astana
2. Garmin
3. Saxo Bank

Lance Armstrong's team won this stage with a very strong ride. Armstrong missed out on the Yellow Jersey(race leaders jersey) by 0.22 secs.

spare a thought for team Garmin(American team), you have 9 team members and need 5 to cross the line for your team time(not 6 or 7 as i previously thought). half way through the stage they had lost 4 of their team as they were going that fast. Christian Van der Velde(USA), David Zabrinski(USA), David Millar(GB), Bradley Wiggins(GB) and some bloke whose name i forget were the only 5 left. :o

a breakaway of 6 riders, all but 1were caught before the line. the winner, Thomas Voeckler(Fra). the teams with the best sprinters decided not to help Team Columbia, because if they caught the breakaway they would still lose out to Mark Cavendish. whose to say Cavendish wouldn't of made a mistake or worse fall.

the stage finishes in Barcelona today at where they had the Olympics.

yesterdays stage winner Thor Hushvod(Nor). a big mention to David Millar(GBR) who was in a breakaway of 4, went of on his own with 28km to go, but was caught on the big straight boulevards of Barcelona. this gave the peleton time to catch him. if the roads were not that straight(with it being very wet), he may of stayed clear. very good effort.

todays stage was a belter. Barcelona to Andorra, the first main mountain stage of the tour. a breakaway of 9 riders. the winner of the stage was Brice Feillu(Fra), earlier on the last climb he seemed to be struggling.

the main story though was the main GC riders when Alberto Contador sprinted away from Lance Armstrong and the other contenders to gain a priceless 21 seconds. this however was not enough for the Yellow Jersey. the rider who finished 4th on the stage was Rinaldo Cocentino, who leads the race by 6 secs to Contador. with Armstrong a further 2 secs back.

missed Saturdays stage, was down in Berkshire at my brother-in-laws for a BBQ.

watched yesterdays last night. no real attacks because after the final mountain there was still another 70km to go. needed a mountain top finish for the real attacks by Evans or Schleck.

the winner of the stage was Peirick Fedrigo(Fra) after a long breakaway.

Stage 10: Bastille Day.

a 4 man breakaway that was never in any stage of the day were more than 3 minutes down the road. they were swallowed up with 2.5km to go. big sprint finish and low and behold Mark Cavendish won his 3rd stage of this years Tour. =D> =D> =D>

Stage 11:

Mark Cavendish(GBR) wins his 4th stage of Le Tour. that is 8 stage victories in 2 Tours. also a joint British. he's back in the Green jersey(sprinters) now. Rinaldo Concentino is still in the Yellow Jersey. a special mention to the 2nd place guy on the stage Tyler Farrar(USA) of Team Garmin, was unlucky in the run-in to Cavendish. Cavendish had a bit too much experience of Le Tour(even though it's only his 2nd).

stage 12: a 7 man breakaway from 78km out on this stage. the Nicki Sorensen(Den) broke away at 22km to go, he was followed by Calzati(Fra). these 2 kept away from the other 5 until 3.5km out when Sorensen broke again and was never caught. this is his first stage win in his 7th tour, having finished every one of them.

he gained nearly 6 minutes on the peleton and this moved him up the GC to the mid 20's.

team Colombia did not try and catch the breakaway today as there is a hard stage in the mountains tomorrow and with all their work over the past 2 days they neeeded to take it easy.

Rinaldo Concentino(Ita) is still in the Yellow Jersey and Mark Cavendish(GBr) still holds the Green Jersey.

Levi Leipheimer(USA) broke his wrist in a fall 2kms away from the line and does not start todays stage so Bradley Wiggins(GBr) moves up to 4th place in the GC.

stage 13: the winner was Heinrich Hausller(Ger) who was born in Australia, but recently moved back to Germany where his parents are from. he was in a large breakaway that he broke and deservered the win in the end.

stage 14: Sergie Ivanov won the stage, there was a 12 man breakaway that was holding Geogre Hincapie(USA) as a possible Yellow Jersey leader. Rionaldo Concentino held on to the yellow jersey by 5 seconds.

stage 14: was won by Sergie Ivanov. he was part of a 12 man breakaway , when 10km away he attacked and was never caught.

Rinaldo Concentino is still the holder off the Yellow Jersey, but Thor Hushovd is holder of the green .

stage 15: the big mountain finish at Verbier. it didn't dissappoiunt aswell. all the main GC contenders were there on the final climb. 8.5km was the total climbing of the last mountain.

Alberto Contador(Spa), Lance Armstrong(USA), Andy Schleck(Lux), Bradley Wiggins(GBr), Andreas Klodden(Ger), Cadel Evans(Aus), Carlos Sastre(Spa) and Niballi(Ita) were the only ones of note left. Contador took a look at the others and just left them for dead, there was only Andy Schleck who tried to go with him.

Contador took the stage victory and the Yellow Jersey to boot. he was 40 odd secs clear of Schleck. further down was Niballi, Frank Schleck(Lux) and Bradley Wiggins who all lost 1min 6 secs. then came Sastre, Evans, Klodden and then Armstrong all losing even more.

it was a classic mountain stage and Contador showed why he is favourite to win it again.

a rest day today, then 2 more Alp stages. no mountain top finish though. on Saturday there is a mountain top finish, highly unusual so late in the Tour.

stage 16: the usual breakaways, but this time it kept clear of the main GC contenders. a few break-ups along the way of the rest of the breakaway(not all got away). the winner Mikel Astarloza(Spa) got away on his own and got his first Tour stage win.

stage 17: the biggest stage in this years tour. it had 5 mountains to climb today, 1 2nd class catergory and 4 1st class(mountains are from 4 - 1, with an extra HC classification). there was a breakaway early doors, Thor Hushovd(Nor) was going it alone to get the 2 sprint bonuses to almost secure the Green Jersey. he was caught up with 2 climbs left. there was an attack by Andy(Lux) and Frank Schlek(Lux) from team Saxo Bank who needed to try and break Alberto Contador(Spa) and gain time on Bradley Wiggins(GBr) and Lance Armstrong(USA) to try and get a podium finish on Sunday. they got away from Wiggins and Armstrong, but Contador and Andreas Klodden(Ger) went with them.

with 2km to go to the top of the last mountain(still 12.4km away from the finish) Contador attacked. it seemed to work, but the Schleks kept their cool and road back to him. this left Contador hampered abit as his team-mate Klodden was left behind.

Armstrong had also broke away from Wiggins and waas in pursuit of Klodden. he caught up with Klodden with 3km from the finish, with Vincenzo Nibali(Ita) with them both.

on the final decent for the hard work that the Schleks had done, with not much help from Contador, they come to an agreement that older brother Frank could win the stage. the final sprint was mainly un-contested.
