Rookies Tournament I [Winner: K-dub]

Post by Hoagy »

This is a chance for low ranked players to enjoy a tournament without having "better" players coming along and ruining it all.

To enter, you need to be a cook or cadet and have taken 95% or more of your turns. Just click 'post reply', leave a response and nominate up to four maps.

Sorry, no new recruits - though if you are close to finishing 5 games and likely to be a cadet or lower, put your name down anyway if you want to enter. This is to ensure that no hustlers enter.

If you are a cook or cadet when you enter, and get promoted to private or higher before the tournament starts, don't worry, you'll still be in the tournament.

The maps played will be the ones with the most nominations (four maps will be used altogether).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maps to be used in this tournament

1: British Isles 2
2: World 2.1
3: Scotland
Final: American Civil War

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games will be Standard, Sequential, Flat Rate, Chained, No Fog. Game speed: Casual.

16 players are needed for this tournament. The first round will be four groups of four players each and will play the best of three games.

Reserves will also be needed.

Players will score 3 points for winning their first round games, but will lose 1 point each time they miss a turn.

Deadbeats will automatically be replaced by a reserve, who will continue with the points of the player they are replacing and will receive two additional points to compensate for some of the points lost by the deadbeating player; or 0 points, whichever is higher.

The highest four scoring players will qualify for the final, which will be a four player game with the same settings as the first round games. If there is a tie for the last slots in the final, then the number of players in the final will be increased accordingly to accommodate this.

OK. I'll humour you. Funny. Ha ha.

I'm sure the people who want to join are capable of deciding for themselves which maps they would like, though.

Thank you anyway for your suggestion.

I didn't realise somebody had already done a similar tournament. I guess great minds think alike. Thanks psychobkrazy.

OK. So some entrants missed the bit that said "have taken 95% or more of your turns".

I've lowered the bar to 90%, AND NO LOWER!

Hopefully the mechanism of losing points in the tournament will prevent or reduce any missed turns.

With 33 games played so far. If you play a few more games and make sure you take ALL your turns, you should be able to get yout attendance rating up to 90%.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update

I've just worked out that you need to take somewhere in the region of another 121 turns without missing a single go to get up to 90%. That can be as many as 20 games.

If this were any other tournament, the answer would be no. However, the idea of this tournament is to give low ranked players a chance of playing in a tournament against players of a similar skill level. The attendance rating bar, as well as losing points for missing turns, is to encourage entrants to play consistently and not skip turns. I am well aware that some players miss turns through no fault of their own (no internet access, work, school, commitments etc.) and that a minority deliberately skip turns thinking that they can gain an advantage with the deferred armies rule (or they're on 5 cards in an escalating game and don't want to cash yet).

I will put a poll up and see if the other entrants want the attendance rating bar dropped or not.

I'd like to join this tournament!

If it's possible to add a map, then I would go for BeNeLux. But if not, then I'll choose for British Isles 2!:)

I'm a cadet with the score of 844. Kind of noobish huh:$

Count me in! ;)

If I've missed something, then feel free to message me! ;D

I've taken 93% of my turns. Been on holidays for a while:(

2 questions... are you going to have an updated list of the entrants so people know how many slots remain available? and are you going to list which maps are leading in the vote for maps? this would be very helpful. i suggested a few lower ranked members of my clan join this tournament to gain some tournament experience, and they said they were not sure if they wanted to join, because the info i just listed above is not readily available. one of them wants to know the quality of the players in the tournament, the other wants to know which maps are going to be involved or possibly involved before joining. so, maybe making a players list and map vote leading list will help fill this up. just a suggestion.-0

Two answers

1) After the first posting describing the tournament is an entrants list which I keep as up to date as possible. Also the tournament title has the number of entrants/total entrants required after the title (e.g. 8/16 means 8 people have signed up and the tournament needs 16 people to be filled).

2) Directly beneath the entrants list is a list of the maps nominated so far and the number of votes for each, which I also keep as up to date as possible.

Also, each participant can nominate up to 4 maps, and some have kept their nominations in reserve for later. This is fine. Just make sure you get your nominations in before the tournament actually starts.

Tip: Some forum viewers might not be used to the forum layouts, finding themselves reading the latest posts, and missing the posts at the beginning of the forum thread that has all the tournament information, entrants lists etc. At the top and bottom of each page, on the right hand side, are some little boxes with numbers in them. Click on the [1] box and it should take you to the beginning of the forum thread.
