Hyrule Map (Ocarina of Time) [Abandoned Copyright]

Post by Rallion »

Here's the latest version of my Hyrule map.

Recent changes:
0.4: Added the three fairy fountains. Cosmetic and name changes.
0.3: Added army shadows and moved the text around. Added some funny business around Lon Lon Ranch. Other cosmetic changes.
0.2: completely redrawing the borders to be less 'accurate' and more practical, as well as the addition of ten new countries.

Current Version:
Image

As long as I stick to self-made art and place names, copyright issues shouldn't be an issue here any more than, say, with maps of Middle Earth, or fan art.

Continents (7):
Hyrule Castle: 5 territories, 2 border, attacked by 2
Death Mountain: 7 territories, 1 border, attacked by 4
Zora River: 6 territories, 3 border, attacked by 4
Kokiri Forest: 7 territories, 2 border, attacked by 2
Hyrule Field: 5 territories, 4 border, attacked by 7
Gerudo Desert: 7 territories, 1 border, attacked by 2
Lake Hylia: 5 territories, 3 border, attacked by 3

Total: 42 territories

I wasted an insane amount of time playing Ocarina. Used to just boom around on Epona shooting at stuff for hours and the fishing game was immense! Mental zombies in the marketplace when you grew up scared the shit outa me though...

Looks good, might make an interesting map. Would definitely like to see how it progresses. Copyright on images of Zelda and suchlike may be a problem though...

I doubt you'll ever get past copyright issues. Get the permission from Nintendo now before you put any hard work into it. That way if you don't get permission, you haven't spent all the time making a nice map for no reason.

Nintendo actually has a policy of never responding to requests for permission to use copyright materials.

Anyway, assuming I use no actual Nintendo-made images (which sadly means no logo), copyright shouldn't be an issue, although copyright laws are really vague on these kinds of things and there are no precedental cases. (It seems to me that if a from-scratch low-quality visual description of a fictional landscape is a copyright violation, than so is a one-paragraph summary of a movie or novel.) It's certainly no worse than any piece of fan art, or three of the maps already in use.

I don't know, someone tried to make a Super Mario Land map, and they couldn't because of copywrite issues.

If you do make the map, heres a few suggestions.
- Change the background color to something other than black.
- Rename the territories that are "Eastern, Western, Northern....", there are a lot of areas in Zelda, you shouldn't need to use boring terms.
- Possibly make some warp paths that you would use the Ocarina for, like from Lake Hylia to Goron Mountain.
- Lon Lon Ranch could have a 1 way entrance, from Eastern Field. But maybe it could attack all 4 sections of field?

Looks good for a first draft though.

Just an FYI. You can have the Tri-Force on your halo characters in Halo II as a symbol. It isn't a symbol Nintendo owns or came up with. I don't believe they had to ask to use it.

Good map but your largest continent has only 6 territories and there are a lot of fours and fives so you proberbly need a few more erritories added.

I Like the map but check the copyrights before you go on.

If you get the permission it could be a great map

much better.

38 terratories so its going to be quite a small map. Unless u can Fit/Make room for more.

Here's what I know of that currently needs to be looked at:
Extra links between areas. One idea that I had is to link the temples together in some way. It's good for gameplay, I think, and also is fairly true to the game the map is based on. I don't know if only certain temples should be linked, or if they should all be considered bordering each other.

Are more areas needed? If so, where?

Are the borders okay as they are?

Other stuff:
What do you think about what I've done with Lon Lon Ranch? In can be attacked from two territories, but can attack four.

Should there be extra bonuses associated with the Temples? They're central to Ocarina, so perhaps each one could grant an extra bonus.

i think ALL temples should be linked. and maybe +1 for each temple owned.

Kokiri Forest should be Lost Woods and the Lost Woods should be Sacred Meadow.

I rather like it. As previously said, it's a small map, which would definitely be an issue. Also, the Gerudo Valley -> Lakeside Observatory link is one way and should me noted as such. Also, I think adding little things would help get you more territories and not be such a huge overhaul, like Great Fairy Locations and the like. I shall ponder.

hmmm... 3 Great Fairy locations would make 42contries (which is the same as classic) not a bad idea

Gerudo Valley -> Lakeside Observatory(i thinks its Labertory, but oh well) is one way

Actually there are years of case history around copyright infringement and intellectual property rights. You can't profit from somebody else's work without permission. If indeed you are using all original graphics NOT intended to look like someone else's copyrighted material, and you are using entirely original names throughout, you're fine... but if this isn't a derivative work, why write on the bottom that it is? It's an invitation for Nintendo's lawyers to send a letter to CC.

I agree - frankly I'm surprised the Tolkein estate hasn't asked CC to remove it, as they are very particular about issuing licenses.
