After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
So...we all know that when most people join Conquer Club, the first map they play, or are looking to play at least, is the Classic World Domination Map.
However, in time each user usually branches out to try other maps. So, what were the first few maps that you branched out to play on and try after the Classic?
For me, and many of the long-time users, there wasn't a lot of selection in the beginning--so I'm sure some of the newer users will have a more ranging picklist. But to share anyways...
Me, in this order:
Canada
Asia
British Isles
Why those? Hm, The visuals of the old Canada map certainly were not it, but I was rather intrigued with the game play---of course quite similar to Classic but slightly different.
Asia and British Isles had slightly better graphics than the old Canada map. I remember having success on British Isles---but never really much success on Asia. But I still keep playing it---strange.
And yours? Why?

Classic shapes was actually the 4th game I joined. The first was World 2.1 and it's been my favorite ever since. 2nd and 3rd games were San Fransisco and North America. I didn't like Classic Shapes right away, I found the territory names confusing. I didn't join a Classic Art until I'd been here 3 months.

There were a lot fewer maps when I started, too. I started with what I thought to be less popular maps. Crossword, Chinese checkers and then Age of Merchants.
I always tell new people that beginning with Classic is a bad idea because those who play it are very, very good. Its better to try on some of the less popular maps -- either one that plays like Classic or to just try something different and go for one of the maps that play nothing like classic at all.

World 2.1 was my first and only map I have played.

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
After a few games on classic i branched out quite a lot, but ehre are the first 3 i chose:
World 2.1
Hong Kong
Midguard
I suppose i picked world 2.1 because it seemed similar too classic and familiar. I was probably drawn to hong kong by the nice graphics and bright colours, and it was my first win
Midguard i dunno why i played probably just chance

For me after the Classic it was:
World 2.1 (Cos it's so big and great gameplay)
Africa (due to bright colours, very appealing!)
Europe (Still love this map, one of my favourites)
Premier2k

i think this is really interesting, because i was never a fan of classic and had to be talked into playing on it by jbrettlip. really fascinating to see which maps you moved onto from classic... nice topic...-0

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
I figured World 2.1 would be popular on the lists---since it seems like a logical expansion from the Classic Maps. Though I'm interested to see what other maps people branched out to---and why...

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
My first other maps where USA, CCU and Circus Maximus.
I remember being very impressed with the graphics of USA. I loved the exploded continent look and the wallpaper backgrounds in the continents. I still think it is a nice bold look, but the graphics are nothing compared to the masterpieces coming out of the foundry today!
As for CCU and Circus, they both came through the foundry just before I joined. At first I was very interested in the map making process, so I sat down and read through the entire thread for each map to see how things progressed and how I could try to make my own map. I decided to make a map of a playground, complete with horrible graphics in Paint, and tons of features that could not be coded into the XML (including a see-saw, where if the armies where unbalanced at the end of the round they would all end up on the "heavier" side at the start of the next round). The slide had a chain of one way attacks which I thought would REALLY spice up the gameplay.
Luckily I had the sense to not post this map.
So I definitely picked my first games based on interest in the foundry process, but I stuck mostly to classic for around a year, and still definitely prefer the classic style maps.

Doodle Earth <-- because it made for quick, fun, fast paced games!
Age of Realms 2 and New World <-- really fun maps with fog on... the drop forms your strategy and forces you to adapt to each game differently
Montreal <-- amazing map for team play... not too popular for some reason though

My first 5 maps were, in order:
Asia
Classic
Middle East
Europe
Brazil
After that came all the other regular standard maps at that time: Canada, USA, British Isles, Germany and, erm, Crossword
Amazingly, considering its my most played map by a huge margin, it appears I didn't play World 2.1 until my eventual return to CC in 2008.

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
Mainly 4 maps IIRC.
Canada & British Isles; due to their closeness to the Classic gameplay (+ I love the look of new Canada).
Rail USA & King of the Mountains; not really sure why but I think it came from them being so completely different in style. KotM has bright colours too and that is always a positive.

Oh golly, I can't remember that far back, although I recall Seige! being one of the first "other" maps I played.
And the Eldar Scrolls one. Can't remember the exact name.

I think my first game was actually on philipines. Good map, but I haven't played it much. Played disc world and asia early on, along with middle earth.

Tamriel, because I just joined the first thing on the list out of avaliable games, unfortunatley with 2 deadbeats as team partners.
World 2.1 as it was like the classic map but on a much grander scale.
British Isles as it is my homeland

Your first games were on Middle Earth, Europe and World 2.1.

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
Lol I joined a Space game... what a stupid idea that was! I got slaughtered

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
lol... what a noob i was at the start...
one of 1st games i joined was Europe, FREESTYLE, TRIPLES, FLATRATE...
I had NO idea what those words meant... I just clicked the first JOIN GAME that i saw..
So after playing Europe, Asia, MiddleEast, and British Isles...
I thought, HEY... I should play EVERY MAP here...
So i played 7 more maps, and by then i thought, what the heck am i doing...
besides, that was most of the maps at the time...
Anyway, i slowly channeled myself to my current game play...
and while i do not win as often, this is where i am the most happy...

Re: After the Classic: Initial Forays Into Unfamiliar Maps
I played Middle Earth, Hong Kong, USA, and North America all before I played classic. Then Brazil, Africa, Australia, Alex Empire, Tameril, Ireland, Montreal, Indochina, Asia all before playing another game of classic. I had already played enough classic with the board game so apparently I was looking for more.
