favorite continent to have
k, not sure if this poll has been done befor, but I'd like to know which continent you enjoy having the most in the classic map.
Re: favorite continent to have
It also depends how many players are in the game. Europe & N America, or even Africa can be very difficult to hold early in a 5- or 6-player game. There, going for a small continent is the way to go, if possible, building a small advantage slowly. South America is a favorite because it gives you 2 very good lines of attack when you get that advantage. Oceania is great for defense but poor for staging attacks; still, it's worth getting while other players fight amongst themselves.
In a 3-player game, if you have unlimited fortifications, you can go for something big right away and hold it. Hold Europe or North America for a couple turns and you can build up an unbeatable advantage. Going for a weak continent should be a last resort, because it's likely one of the other guys will grab something good.
For 4-player, South America is good, North America better if you can manage to clean it out. Africa is a good possibility if no one is after Europe and you can hold the Middle East, and maybe Southern Europe, as a buffer.

Just to throw this out there, a former room mate of mine once did a thesis project on this using game theory.
His conclusions, while based on some dodgy math, showed that in a game with standard rules (flat rate, one fort, seq) australia is strategically the best continent to hold in games containing 4 or more players. If only 3, then N.America is the best.
Not that that ever stopped me from going for australia in a 3 person match, or losing most of my other matches either.
Just throwing that out there

North america
i definately like north america for games w/ 4 people.
it has great access to the world and the bonus lets you build up quickly.
plus, with North America, south america is easy to take (as long as its not extremely fortified
) and it only adds one more border country. both of those give you 7 bonuses a turn with 4 borders and good access to the world
PS: i like australia in 6 player games because it it like a hiding place where you can wait for your opponents to destroy eachother while you build up a large army to destroy whoevers left

Where do you go once your have Oceania? There's only Asia, which is difficult to hold. You could try for two discontiguous areas, but in my experience, players rarely succeed that way..
If you have a strong foothold in South America, then you have the perfect launching ground for an attack on North America or Africa. Also, if another player is trying to grab either North America or Africa, you can attack them directly. If they're going for Europe, you have only two hops to deprive them of a continent. But so few people go for Asia, you're not in a position to influence the greater game.
Oceania is great if you want to keep out of the way and not be noticed. If you want to have a continent that's easy to get, that gives you leverage to make alliances as well as staging points for future attacks, South America is the one to go for.

I think I start every game differently. depends where my forces are concentrated. I'm quite fond of Africa, though, when I play at home. two reasons:-
1) our house rules give it a bonus of four and
2) at home it's usually a four-player game
worst start: look at the board and discover "het, great, I'm big in Europe!"
