And water alone is not yet fuel and won't be for a very long time.

water (hydrogen+oxygen) and electricity is theoretically enough to propel a spaceship in space..
NASA and ESA believes that Ceres has more freshwater than earth.. sure it´s in the main belt and perhaps too far away to be harvested within 200 years, but some asteroids do have a lot of water and I´m hoping some near earth asteroids also have it. 8-[

You forget two VERY big factors in this whole "throw money at it and it will get fixed" scenarios.
#1 EDUCATION.. particularly science wich is very neatly being eroded as we speak.

surely this is not an ongoing trend and an endless downward spiral, or do you believe that humanity is rotting away and we are facing "mad max" scenarios?

#2 RESOURCES ..which are not, here on earth in unlimited supply and readily accessible to all now. Where they are means huge expense.. not just money, but ecological and economic (as in damaging to those living and working in those areas who will be effectively displaced with little or no compensation .. or wish they were displaced).

this is why we need to start asap and not wait until earth runs out of resources.. if we find little green men on the asteroids then I guess we´ll have to evict them. ;)
and yes it has to be supervised capitalism and countries with great visions - the US used to have it and I refuse to believe it simply was a side effect of the cold war.
You can do it again, and if not.. then I guess we have to start hoping for China to catch up.
(they are becoming increasingly capitalistic)
We Europeans are too lazy and slow and cheap and would argue about financing for half a century.. I said 200 years in my first post but perhaps it should be 3-400.. anyway..

Long live capitalist socialism!
We need to rob space of its riches to avoid becoming extras in an australian b-movie!

Blasphemer, Picard was from the grape growing aristocracy of France. Everybody knows it was the Vulcans that were the socialists.

Of course it is well documented, by propagandists using well honed disinformation techniques. Get your head out of the echo box.

Unfortunately, when they practice on themselves they destroy their own minds. Such is life.

I don't think either the Romulans or the Cardassiens were particularly socialistic.

The Cardassians were Trotskyites -- like today's neo-conservatives.

The Romulians were the Peshawar of Afghanistan.

the romulan race were based on the roman empire.. who were like imperialist commies for much of their existance - definitely very far from capitalist anyway
and the isolationism of the romulans.. two words: north korea

my bad memory made me look up the cardassians.. and thw wikipedia article mentions them being communist-like and "loosely mirroring" the soviet union..

I believe Cardassiens were mirrored on the stereotypes of the oppression and control... but not on economic communism.

started out as the antagonists of the federation.. inspired by the cold war.. but I personally think they were more maoist chinese commies than soviet commies.

he he.. I guess it´s a bit of a stretch depending on what time period you mean
It´s more true with the later eastern/byzantine empire and the "dominium directum".. although there was private property it was ultimately controlled by the state which had the right to confiscate land and force workers to resettle. Compared with western feudalism they were kind of like the commies of their time..

ealier roman empire.. eh ok I give up..
Romulans are not commies - the roman empire was more fascist than socialist.

The tribbles are of course money - at first everyone likes them but their multiplying leads to them taking over.
It´s a symbol of greed - money almost has a life of its own and threatens even our good federation comrades.
The Vulcans (brainwashing northkoreans) don´t understand what they´re good for and the (maoist-leninist) Klingons hate them.

Well I could agree with that. I was referring more to the early roman empire which actually was the largest part of their existance. They were fascist in the way that any country from the 16th or 17th centry onwards was, in that their country had a great deal of freedom on the expense of a bunch of other countries. The rich had the power, but since the rich always had the power and still do that's sort of a silly tangent.

There wasn't much like communism because quite frankly the rich and powerfull didn't give a f*ck about lower people and also didn't say they did. (which is usually the case with communism.)

I don't know anything about romulans.
