but no love for the peninsula?
i heat the penninsula, im from HMB originally. but somethings gotta go, and the angles worked best with only the main part of SF showing...

Also, I think you should use the names china town, and north beach
I had them both in earlier versions, but if you look at that part of the map and try and fit in 2 more regions, its kinda messy and congested...i removed them for space...

I see what you mean. Geographically, this portion of the bay makes for the best map. I do think you should call Potrero Hill, North Beach, as most people call it in the city. Can't wait to play this one!

10 borders! The downtown is simply unholdable!!!!
And I think I got the idea of All SF and All EB bonuses. But, they need be better explained, including that All EB is just +1, once you already receive +7 from the continents. In fact, I dont like this idea too much for this map.

youre totally right. i gotta rework some of the borders in downtown

yeah i think i agree and ill remove the all east bay bonus, since the focus point of the map should be SF. will that help to make the all SF bonus clearer?

what about lowering the oakland bonus to +4 too?

i think you must do this:

1) your name in the left upper corner seems to important to me... make it tinyer
2) i don't like the sea it looks like its all flying
3) make the legnd a bit tinyer so it doesn't reach seaclif
4) mayby you can make a background to the legend
5) can you make it more clear what all san fransisco is? i don't know it...
6) make al borders the same thickness

if youre going to take the time to leave comments like this atleast take the time to provide some reasons or specifics...is it the concept? the graphics? the playability? and if the answer is still everything, ok....but give me something more than just a negative comment.

id rather have a list of reasons why my map is total crap than just a comment saying "crap".

I don't like this map for some reasons:

1) I'm not sure if it's good for a risk map to be satilite.

2) I don't think the map is good for playability.

3) It's the map that rivals my own of the SF BAy Area.

yeah, there has already been much discussion around what to call the downtown areas, as there are a dozen little neighborhoods that are just too small to represent. Chinatown, North Beach, the Marina, the Tenderloin, Japantown, Nob Hill, Fort Mason, and a handful of other 'hoods and landmarks are lumped into Pac Heights and Civic Center... the concern at this point should be more about playability and less about names, because the names will never be perfect.

and thanks for the credit, johloh, but 99.8% of the time and work has been yours. I look forward to seeing this progress further.

This map is my favorite potential map... this needs to happen. The 3D effect is unique and I think will be a great addition. So what's the hold up??

SF vs Bay

Post by EvilOtto »

This is looking good so far... I could see skewing reality a bit here and there. Would be cool to make Alcatraz bigger and a territory. Would also be cool to include other famous locations like china town, but I can see the argument against it.

What you have labeled as Parkside ain't Parkside... I'd call that Ingleside. What you have as Ingleside is like... Westwood? Sunnyside? Diamond Heights? Glen Park? Take your pick.

Since there is a South San Francisco, and it isn't shown on this map, it is a bit odd to use that as a continent name... but I haven't thought of anything better.

I think the water looks okay. Maybe a bit less coastal highlighting.

I vote for no group bonuses (all east bay, all sf). To lower the border count on downtown I'd say screw Bernal Heights. Maybe keep Civic Center from reaching the Richmond (extend Haight up to touch Pac. Heights)? If you are looking for more territories do inner and outer richmond.

Please keep working on this.

ok heres some changes...

-chilled the waves out, not so bright, hopefully doesnt look so floaty...
-changed bernal heights border and Haight border so that downtown has less borders
-removed ferry connection from alameda to downtown to lessen downtowns borders
-got rid of all east bay bonus
-got rid of all sf bonus, i figure if you have all of sf you likely will win anyway, or have more bonuses than anyone else, so you dont really need another extra bonus, and its confusing to describe somewhere what all sf is.
-lowered oakland bonus from 5 to 4
-moved legend down, not touching the continent anymore
-moved sig to lower right corner
-put a title in upper left corner
-changed name of parkside to ingleside
-changed name of old ingleside to glen park

things to still do possibly....
-make it clearer that you cannot attack from hunters point to potrero hill, is this clear enough?
-change yellow/brown continent colors if they are still unclear
-enlarge alcatraz island to make it unrealistic, but a playable country.(alcatraz is the little island next to the F in Fishermans wharf) and then remove a country to keep the # even.

I think the only thing I didnt do was making all the border lines equal in thickness...I have the continents oultlined in a thicker line, and the regions in a less thick line. i think this adds to the distinctions between the continents. I can do this no prob, maybe we will have a poll in the future...

(also this is a lower quality version, for easier download, so if the colors arent totally smooth, its because of that)

well...? what do you think?

i like it. Still having trouble with the water - it's so flat, it ruins the 3D landscape. There has to be some way of adding some perspective to the bay to give it the illusion of depth.

Location of the Fisherman's Wharf army circle could be confused for Pac Heights or Fin. Dist... not by anyone who's paying attention, but it's an easy fix and so probably worth moving up a bit..

Now that you've removed the Alameda ferry connection, how am I going to get to Giants games?

wow this is nice and different to every other map we have. I think you put colours that are too alike too close to each other. The continent with Golden Gate Park in it should swap colours with the continent with San Pablo in it.

good idea. i did similar colors next to eachother because there used to be bonuses for holding entire large areas, but now that thats gone...no reason to not move the colors around. ill work on that too.
