I"m sorry if this was mentioned ages ago and I just missed it, but it shouldn't New Guinea be a German flag colony?
Can't wait to try this map out!

There are a number of additional colonies/territories/protectorates that could have been included, and at different points of production there were some in addition to what's on the map now... Hong Kong, for example. However, all of the small territories and extra colony flags started to become unwieldy, and by having colonies all over the map the Empire bonuses began to get harder to hold. I hope we've paired it down to a number that is good for gameplay.

Fair enough. I'm having a blast on this map so far. The gameplay is well balanced, so after having played a third of a game on it, I'll say you made a good decision.

Re: Eastern Hemisphere [Beta]
I like it.
Re: Eastern Hemisphere [Beta]
Great - just finished 2 1v1 games on it. I would say that the china bonus is too high, as you can't bombard china - and it's difficult to get into because of the mountains. In both games china was fought over and whoever won that won the game. Africa was hard to gain bonuses in and keep (as it should be), and the bombard was used to good effect. Overall I like the map a lot, just worried that someone holding china and japan would be unstoppable - maybe that's what you were after?

Well, you should never get involved in a land war in Asia, and you should never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
I'll keep my eye on the China bonus in my games.

Hmm... I didn't get a map medal for that one. I'll have to try to wrestle that medal away from cairnswk.

Might just be my paranoia but every time I play this map I start with a lot of Africa like every territory but two

HaHa, I was playing a map the other day and noticed your name was the Author. I had not noticed it before, and thought, Man, I did not know that you were the mapmaker. Maybe it was "The High seas". I remember thinking, I sure wished that there were more maps by Oaktown.oaktown wrote:porkenbeans wrote:And, I would also like to thank you for creating my favorite map, -Prohibition Chicago.

I've played a few of this map already and love it. This may be quick on it's way to one of my favorites. However there should be a legend somewhere explaining the mountains as impassable. My first time I was unsure and it did cost me an assault.

Agreed, it's confusing around italy, mongolia, ormsk til after you've made the mistake. Seems obvious once you've done it, but still cost me...
Still loving the map, though.

Nice map, but its confusing : Austria Hung. can attack Italy but Germany can't, in this map it looks like Germany is bordering Italy

Great map definitly one of my favorites... Nice job OAK!!! .. I only have 1 issue ... If its possible to add the amount of colony teritories you need hold to get the bonus.. i think a simple number in parentheses would suffice ... (3) for italian colonies and (6) for GB etc those are the only 2 i know.. i havent attempted for the others...

I'm in the middle of one right now and I have to agree that at least one territory in China and Japan should be able to get bombarded
Re: Eastern Hemisphere [Beta]
Lots to respond to...
I'd be open to discussing the China bonus. I'm in a few games and I actually haven't seen anybody hold China yet, but I can see how with a good drop China would be strong. An alternative to dropping the bonus might be adding a border somewhere, but i can't see where.
While this might be nice for gameplay, it wouldn't make much sense historically. We played with a Hong Kong territory, but it just made that part of the map too confusing. I'd rather explore other options.
Well, it was suggested (by carinswk) that a "mountains = impassable" tag be included in the legend, and i fought it because on 95% of maps the mountains are a given as impassable. I guess the problem here lies in the fact that the mountains are more stylized than on other maps. I'm reconsidering.
If nothing else, the Alps need to be doctored up to make them more clear, especially on the small map.
thoughts?

Re: Eastern Hemisphere [Beta]
Although China has a lot of borders they are relatively passive - mostly I guess it would be held from Japan, making this border irrelevant. The northern border is hard to get to and unappealing. It is very unlikely someone will have a big army in the N of USSR - there's nothing to do up there. That makes this border relatively uncontested. Sianking isn't bordering a likely empire so it is vulnerable only to an attack meant to break the bonus which is more unlikely. It really means that the only contested borders is the one around australasia and india. This can be defended at canton only. Thus china and japan for a bonus of 7 can be held with a strong force in canton, a token northern force and a medium force in Sianking.
This may be historically true, but gameplay wise i certainly don't want to be in africa except as a last resort, europe will be tricky - the best places are china and australasia. If I have a bad drop there what do I do?
Don't tell anyone in the games I'm in

Re: Eastern Hemisphere [Beta]
Another beautiful map oaktown - thanks very much.
I'm part way through my first game so not sure yet about how the gameplay tweaks work out, but the outlook is good.
I'm a World 2.1 & British Isles fan. This somehow catches the flavour of both, adds some subtle gameplay tweaks and has bags more graphical style than either.
I really like the European Powers being integrated with their colonies so naturally - it's much more aesthetically/logically pleasing than the 'mini-map' approach that has been used elsewhere. [No disrespect intended to the authors of such maps.]
Great Stuff !

Definitely. I have had multiple turns where I have deployed, only to figure out that I can't do anything due to mountains that simply look like part of the picture, not something that affects play.
This is one of those maps I can't play without the BOB script running.

Re: Eastern Hemisphere [Beta]
it is beautiful and it is fine. if someone doesn't realize that you can't cross the himalayas unless you are ghengis khan, then i am not sorry for them. the map is beautiful. leave it alone. i have yet to be able to use the naval aspect of it, and look forward to expanding game play into that... great map... nice breath of fresh air for the stagnant and redundant conquerer maps.. thanks!!!-0
