i have a slight preference for including london in some form, though i'll happily support any version that is consistent within its time period.

Benn your map is beautiful. I love it. It's totally my style. The plain easy to read territ names. The soft earthy colors. The smooth borders and the very slight texture under the lands. Well done.

I think London should be on the map. I just really really don't like that inset. Could you maybe instead put a symbol on the map? Or a flag? That inset is really confusing.

Are you going to add "Wales" text, similar to how you have Scotland and France, etc?

It's there, but underneath the inset

I'll have a fiddle around with the inset later...

the lion rampant is often associated with scotland. for england, isn't the three lions emblem more suitable?

I'm not sure whether I prefer the three lions or the single rampant lion...
(I've moved the Wales label for Andy ;-))

I'm liking the single lion. More ferocious.

Is the single rampant lion a symbol of England? I think other countries and states have used it through the ages.

The three lions is more English and is also used on the royal coat of arms.

What about the motto Ben? Any chance of changing that to Land of Hope and Glory or Dieu et mon droit as I suggested earlier? The latter is the official motto of England...the former is I believe the unofficial English anthem.

sorry to re-state what has been said but i think this is very important because it is on of the only real flaws of the map.

DJ Teflon wrote:I guess the big question about the London insert is how important geographical accuracy and gameplay are to the cartographer. No London means 19th century england. London means 20th century (most of it) - although see previous discussion re.sizeof London pre-1974 (when the whole county landscape changed). The bonus for London would give the gameplay a slight twist, not a major change.

It looks like any of the 3 options would have different people supporting it.

However, if either of the insert options are selected (current insert or insert with old London county size) then it does seem that the main map would need amending to show London, as per thenobodies80's point.

Maybe I am wrong but it is very confusing and other people agree. It is a good idea but it is confusing.
Maybe you should put a poll up for what to do about the London insert and see what the response is. Rj has some good ideas bout how to fix it and I think his ideas could work.

The map is looking great. Cant wait to play it.

1) Dont really care for the 3 lions, the 1 lion was better IMO
2) As people have stated, the London inset is confusing. There's not even a tiny shape to represent where its at. Maybe add a symbol (I think RJ mentioned something like that) or a little box?
3) How do you get to the Isle of Wight?

Only things to comment on right now, this looks great :)

I prefer the current motto...

But would completely disapprove of anything french being on the map - I was considering requesting the removal of the "france" tag.

Haha. Vive la France! :p

Not my fault that the English motto is in French. Actually a lot of the English language is derived from Latin and French thanks to the Normans. ;)

Back on topic...

I'm going to go with either "Green and Pleasant Land" or "Land of Hope and Glory" for the subtitle... At the moment I'm erring on the former, as it fits the 'green' theme of the map.

With regards the inset, yes it needs some work - but it will require a bit of thought and effort. I'm undecided about how best to implement it, but agree it needs to be made clearer and less confusing.

The lions - As I said before, I'm torn between using one or three....

"Green and Pleasant Land" would be my choice as well — as you said it suits the map theme very nicely.

Hehe. Green and Pleasant doesn't remind me of England though although the map's colour scheme uses shades of green.

Land of Hope and Glory is more fitting for such a great nation...a poll perhaps?

OK, here's another (quick) update...

The London inset has gone - instead I have added London as a small territory that will border Kent, Essex, Middlesex and Surrey. The circle looks a little blurry, but I'll sort that out if people think this idea works better.
I have added some lines to show where London, Rutland and Isle of Wight go.
