I bet they named Oragnes before Carrots. Someone said "lets call this orange, oranges" then someone said "ok, now what about this one (pointing to the carrot)" and the guy said "oh shit" he looked at it for a second, and finally said "how about long pointy thing....we'll just go by shapes next"
