What I've Learned and How To Play

Post by jim save »

What I’ve learned and how I play.

My name is Jim Save, and I’ve been a member of Conquer Club since Sun Jan 25, 2009 at 1:15 pm. Like a lot of players on CC, I like to play risk and love my strategy games and have been doing them for years. But I have learned that everything I thought I knew about risk, does not help me here in CC Land. My first shocker was how BAD I really am at risk. Now that is not quite true in a sense, because I know the board of the Classic Risk game quite well. It just does not apply here very well. All the boards are different and with different styles to each game. You don’t get that in Hasbro Inc. Classic Risk game. Every map here on Conquer Club is unique, made by players, for players. Each map goes through a difficult process to get here and be played on Conquer Club. I like to think that the maps each have their own personality, and that personality becomes important to how the game is played. Then there are the people who play the maps. They also each have a deferent personality that combines the two to make a unique gaming experience. It is a beautiful symbiotic relationship.
What I’ve learned after playing, I think, is important for all to know and that is why I am sharing this information. Some might think that it is foolish to tell the other players how you play, but I think that sharing this information will help ME while also helping others. I may not have been playing for a long time here on Conquer Club, but I still think that my advice will be beneficial to all who take it. I did some research and will be sharing where I got that information. So without further ado, here is what I’ve learned and how I play.
Siege Map

I love the Siege Map. The place you want to take over first is the Great Hall and the Throne Room. If you control at least two at the start of the game you have a good chance of taking it over. Now there is something else to consider here as well. If you control 4 and 5, you are in a good position. If you control 1, 2, or 3, it is not as good. Look at the map and I hope you can see why. Another thing to look at is how much the other player’s control. The Great Hall and Throne together equals 6 regions. If it is divided equal among you, wait and see what happens. While you wait, build up some troops on Inner Wall 2 and wait until it is ripe to attack and take it all. The way to win in this map is to get the Throne and Great Hall early and keep it and you will get +3 every turn. Then bust out and take the Inner Wall. From there I would take my time and build up my forces. Don’t worry about any other regions until you have done all this. By doing that you might lose your other regions but you will be stronger in the end. Another tip you can use in all maps is don’t reinforce a region if it looks like it will be lost anyway. It is just a waste of troops.
Well this is all to say about this map for now. But I will have more in this map and others at a later date. Until then, keep conquering!

RE: being bad at CC and good at Risk.

I figured I was pretty good at Risk when I signed up, but now the way I'll play standard, escalating, 6 player games (on Classic) is much different. With a group of friends who always try to conquer bonus regions first and kill players second, it's easy to win your share just by doing what they do, and being better at it. The thing is, that's a very bad strategy compared to someone who plays for kills first. And I only found out about the truth here.

I also hated playing two player Risk because of the asinine setup involved (a third neutral player, who never attacks and gets alternating deployment, ie. you deploy for it one round, then your opponent the next). Now it's awesome.

Welcome to CC.

I joined looking for a good on line strategy game and this is the best by far. It can also be very very frustrating for a variety of reasons because although it is a strategy game there are many other factor that are completely out of ones control.

I suggest start with a few maps and learn and become good at one game type. Each type be it No card, escalating or Flat rate has its own pros and cons and idiosyncrasies. Those can also change depending on the game map. Although the game is simple at its core there is quit a bit to digest strategy wise.

If your looking to learn the foundations of escalating and folks to help you out give wacicha a pm. Hes the founder of a strategy group that focuses on helping newcomers learn the game basics and improve their ranking. There are several veteren players there who help the new folk such as yourself become competitive.

I wish you luck and lots of fun.

I really enjoyed reading the OP's first paragraph - great to see a player who is really digging CC!

Only thing that threw me after first playing was that on-line Risk has a different dynamic to playing with friends live. I got hammered in my first few games simply because I didn't realise how much more attacking the play is here.

It is MUCH better for it.

I am also much better at risk than I am at CC. This is mostly because what made me good at risk was the fact that I could get into peoples heads and make them do what I want them to do. This does not work here for obvious resons mostly because I can't really get into people's heads if they are not actualy with me. This has, however made me mush better at risk. I have been playing for about a year and a half now and I am still just beginning to grasp the strategies for all the maps. Just as I think I have begun to get good More maps come out and I have to master those. It is a great site for exactly that reson.

LOL I remember my childhood. I had the Board Risk and my friends came to me to play risk at my home. They never attacked me badly

What i learned right off was how different the game plays with 3 men per territory compared with placing them in turn...

So here at CC i plan for the kills, and never go for bonuses...
while the board game remains a bit more balanced in this regard.

Same with me, I've played 15+ games and I won none. All my current games look bleak(accept for 1 but that's what I thought when I controlled the Whole eastern half of the board and got eliminated).
You're lucky you're a cadet, I fry eggs for my adversaries now!

Yes, I also feel that when playing "real RISK" I don't have the chance to get into so many battles as here. CC is much more violent!
I’m also in the business game http://www.bossingame.com
I dare you to beat me also there! :-D
