The World Baseball Classic saw its first eliminations yesterday as Venezuela took out Italy in Pool C and the Dominican Republic emphatically defeated Puerto Rico on a Jose Lima grand slam in Pool D. Meanwhile, the United States slipped into Round Two on a two-run double in the ninth by Ryan Braun to defeat Canada.

Pool C is the first to determine its two advancing teams. Canada and USA will now duel to determine the pool winner.
In other news, we have had four teams eliminated to this point, and all were at the bottom of the pre-tournament rankings: No. 16 Puerto Rico (0-2), No. 15 Venezuela (1-2), No. 14 Cuba (0-2) and No. 13 Italy (0-2). Maybe there's some weight to these rankings.

Also, I switched posts 2 and 3 to move the standings high up in the thread.

Canada exacts a bit of revenge and hands the United States its first defeat, taking the Pool C title in the process.
Game 4338618
The two have a chance to meet again in Round 2, and I know the Dominican Republic is collectively drooling at a chance to take on the Yanks.

China performs the eighth and final elimination of the first round, defeating Japan in Game 4401141. The Chinese will now face Korea for the Pool A title.
Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic has won Pool D, winning three straight games after dropping the opener to the Netherlands. The most recent win, in a rematch against the Dutch, has set up a Round 2 matchup with the DR's archenemy, the United States. Expect some beanballs and throwdowns in this one. Canada and the Netherlands face off in the other Pool 2 opener.

Yeh, the Dominican Republic (DR), made up of members of the Double Rainbow Society (DRSers?) are on a roll. Got some clutch "hitting," and we're rolling to another win. So far, there have been no beanballs, but a few tasteless comments from the Dominicans (I have crass teammates).
