Re: World War 1
On June 28 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated by a Bosnian-Serb named Gavrilo Princip. The goal of the assassination was to break Austro-Hungarian control on the southern Slav provinces and create a Greater Serbia, or Yugoslavia.
I will be on again with more.

Actually, WWI contained one of the most compelling arguments for the good in humanity, the Christmas Truce. I can't believe I hadn't heard about this until late in high school, it made me feel warm inside.

Re: World War 1
If you want to learn about WW1 or WW2, buy a book. asking for people in here to give you a history lesson won't further your accurate knowledge of the subject.
We will however, be glad to post utter rubbish.
WW1
London was bombed by germans in Zepplins
England invented the tank during the war
running at enemy trenches with fixed bayonents is a bad idea when the other side have machine guns
Parachutes had been invented, but pilots weren't allowed them.
WW2
Americans love to tell Europeans that they saved us from the Germans.
Americans who tell Europeans that they saved us from the Germans aren't aware how close the Germans were to creating a flying wing bomber (very similar to the B2) that could fly to New York and back, and drop the Atomic bomb (that Germany was very close to achieving)

Good luck.
Did you know that France is still economically effected by the WWI, because almost a whole generation of young men has been killed then. Can you imagine, almost 100 years later?
I understand your fascination on this subject, have fun figuring it out.

Re: World War 1
I watched a very good program a while back about the world war 1 oil war between Britain and Turkey: my grandfather fought in it but its very overlooked as a war given its importance.
Annoyinly I've forgotten most of what I knew about it (exept that the biggest British military defeat of all time happened in Iraq). Anything particular about the western front I'm pretty good on though.

Re: World War 1
Where are you from? Because if you're in the US, you're not going to find crap on it. In the UK, however, I've run into a ton of material.
Points of Interest for me at least:
Germany was the basic cause. It was the most economically successful state with the highest population. It's land infantry was the most effective in the world.
Germany faced a dilemma, it did not want to be encircled, so therefore it pursued a policy to instill fear of Germany's enmity in the other great powers... which resulted in the powers seeing no other option but to ally together to prevent Germany from controlling the continent. So by trying to bully it enacted its greatest fear.
A-H definitely did get screwed, but it was a long time coming anyway. Hungary was practically independent from the Vienna regime anyway, the Czech state was well on its way (the archduke was going to give them the same deal Hungary got when he took power) and the Slavs, obviously, weren't going to take Hapsburg rule lying down. A-H was really, doomed from the start.
The Germany plan in 1914 was almost successful, the Schlieffen plan, but von Moltke was too indecisive and insecure so he adjusted the plan and fell just short of Paris. A swift German victory would have prevented a lot of grief and suffering.
The British had one of the most capable expeditionary forces, better than the Germans even, but it was tiny. The Germans supposedly believed each British soldier had a machine gun because they shot so many rounds a minute.
The Japanese also entered the war and seized Germany's asian colonies. Most importantly Shandong in China which was granted at Verseillies. This would become a bone of contention between the Chinese and Japanese until WWII.
1915 saw the first use of gas, which wiped out a group of Canadians but the German's were unprepared for its success, so they could not exploit this gap in the line.
Italy joined up this year but against the central powers. More to gain from Austria than France, which they did gain a little bit of mountains, but not Trieste, which was one of their major goals. In the 20's they marched on over and took it anyway.
The Ottoman's also joined the war effort in 1915 only to be invaded at Gallipoli... which they turned back. This was also the beginning of Ataturk's rise to power... he later founded the Republic, saved Turkey from becoming a colony and acts as a Washington like figure in Turkey.
1916 was a real brutal year of the war. It saw two major battles, Verdun and the Somme.
Key thing about Verdun is that the German commander, Falkenhayn, wanted to 'bleed France white' and essentially kill as many French as he could, thus weakening them and later enabling a breakthrough. There were no real tactics, though had tactics been employed the Germans may have well broken through. But slaughter was their chief objective.
Speaking of pointless killing, the Somme took off in early 1916. Haig supposedly said if the attack fails in the first 48 hours, he'd call it off. He didn't and it went on for months, millions dead for a few miles of territory. It also featured a 2 week artillery barrage... which resulted in little to no success.
The British also pulled out of Turkey with nearly 30,000 KIA (13,000 Australian and New Zealanders included)
1917 saw major disaster for the Allies. The French soldiers revolted on the western front, the British were stained on the front and failed at Passchendaele. The Russians revolted and the Russian Republic was proclaimed in February, later to collapse to the Soviet Union in October. The Italians were also routed at Caporetto by German troops, as opposed to Austrian.
At the same time, two major events occurred. The Russian general Brusilov had major success against the Germans using limited artillery barrage and lightning attacks... later to be copied by the German's themselves. The Brusilov offensive later collapsed due to lack of men and munitions.
The Russian's capitulated under the Soviets and forfeited a large amount of territory to Germany, who without an Eastern Front to fight on, would turn their forces to the west.
The Canadians also achieved limited success at Passchendale where the British could achieve none. It is often considered the birth of their nation.
The Americans also joined the war after the Zimmerman telegram and Lusitania events but were not believed to be ready for major war until 1919. It should also be noted that the United States did not join the allies, but was categorized as an "Associate power"
In the 1918 action, the American leadership was regarded as vaguely competent and skilled. The most success with American troops was under British commanders.
1918 became the deadliest year of the war as the German's launched four major offensives coming within 60 miles of Paris.
The allies repelled the German attack and broke through the Western Front. They did not march on Germany, however, but the German army had collapsed and the German politicians signed an armistice on the 11 day of the 11th month in the 5th year of the war.
The British blockade of Germany, continued until the Verseillies treaty was signed in 1919, leaving many starving in Germany.
The new settlement of Europe also saw the rise of a new set of wars, considered by some to be part of the First World War... Poland attacked Russia and gained significant amounts of territory at Russia's expense. Greece also went to war with Turkey to gain Constantinople, but failed.
The Russian Civil War also began in 1920 which saw major British, French, Japanese, American and Czech involvement.
It's far from complete, but its a run down of the interesting highlights of the war.

I'm aware of these things. I'm also aware that these facts don't mean that America didn't save the Europeans from German oppression but rather that they accentuate just how likely it was that Germany would have won the war without American intervention!
WW2 was the second time you tricky Europeans brought America into your in house fighting. Now it seems that you guys want to give us lessons in diplomacy and ethics.

I'm not giving you lessons in diplomacy and ethics, you American twat. I'm just sick to the back teeth of yanks banging on (as per fucking usual) of how great they are and how they saved the world, and still are.
If the Germans had of beaten all of Europe without American assistance, the world today would be a very different place.
I highly doubt America would be a super power.
England wouldn't of repaid the cash owed to America for all the stuff you sold us when we were still able to take the fight to the Germans. And Germany would of eventually attacked America. The Jewish bankers that have brought us all to our knees today, wouldn't be here, and all that technology that Russia and America spirited away from Germany (intercontinental missiles and rockets etc.) would be in the hands of Germany still.
America profited from WW2 like no one else and gave you the foundations for world domination.
German scientists were streets ahead of the rest of the world. Their politics were fucked up, but in hindsight - maybe killing jews was a good idea. Bankers have fucked all of us over.
In a size.

Since few of those fighting then are even alive now, let along here in CC, you could probably get much more from a book or even a quick peruse of the internet.
It was to be the "war to end all wars" ... but wasn't.
It saw the introduction of Chorine Gas, gas masks and, I think, SPAM. (or was that WWII?)
It pretty much ended effective monarchies, but led the way for the Third Reich and WWII.

Re: World War 1
The American soldiers were the reason Germany was defeated. However the American showed up with cavalry and "old school" tactics that the British and French had to tell the US that those were no longer useful tactics. THe US had no concept of trench warfare, combined arms assaults etc..it was sheer manpower.
I will edit this with the book that references it. I think it is called The Myth of the Great War, how the Germans won the battles and the Americans saved the Allies.
