Within a year you'd have President Palin.

Yeah, instead we got the guy that will keep the troops in Iraq, send more to afghanistan, not raise taxes on the rich, and won't hit oil companies with the windfall profit tax. Wait, who won again???? I seem to have their platforms confused.

nothing wrong with a little bit of man on dog love.

Ahh, but the one who was elected is going to print money. Print money... and give it to the happy social workers to give to the ethnic children. Just think, all this time everyone is worrying about where to get funds from, and then Obama comes up with the genius plan of just printing them.
Isn't he wonderful?

Wow I wonder how you'd make america better after its been thru two terms of two very bad leaders...Bush era was awful but it was during the clinton era that all this big money crap happened (started? im not sure about that)..Oh and about that ethnic children remark, you see how much money goes into two wars - the war on drugs and the war on terrorism - not to mention the amount of money that goes into poking holes in the ozone for nasa - and then you see the money that goes into public schools. Wow! the ethnic children sure have everything going their way now, maybe they could send you some of their wealth when the president prints it for them.

I'd start by not absurdly throwing money at the banks that fucked up in the first place for short-term relief that'll cause more pain for more time in the future.
I'd also abandon the charade of having the State run public schools and then claim it's lack of funds that are to blame for their decrepitude.

having the State run public schools
Are you suggesting that a corporation should run public schools?
PS. I go to a public school, it's not that bad.

Re: Is John McCain President?
That is precisely what I'm suggesting, yes. Now, if you want then to have the State pay for people to choose which privately-run school will educate their children, then you still could.

Wait. That was an awkward sentence; do you mean the State would pay this privately-run school instead of the student?
If so, that's not such a horrible suggestion, but I don't think it should replace public schools. There are actually a lot of experimental high schools out there; I'm sure some of them are run that way.
But let people have the choice between the regular public school and this kinda-sorta public school idea, and regular private school. The more choice the better.

I've been out of public schools for some time now but I have three children in them now. And they suck. And what is the reason for opposing school vouchers? Well, so the state can continue to indoctrinate them of course.

Anecdotal evidence ftw. My point was that public schools can be good.
And of course, there's a conspiracy...

Well, I'd agree, except in any real scenario, the Public Schools would be too great a drain on resources to be maintained alongside private ones without gigantic deficits being run. If they could be out-competed and die a natural market death, I'd be all for it, but sadly, there's the problem of state monopolies... they don't obey fundamental laws of the market.
But frankly... we have our food made by private companies. We don't dream of letting the State take over grain production, if only because of the Soviet connotations. We still allow the very poor to purchase food, since we consider it a duty of citizens to provide those who can't eat with the bare minimum necessary to survival.
Why is health, or education, any different?

I doubt enterprises focused on maximizing their own profits can be trusted with the education of the public. Be it first-graders, high-schoolers, university students or adults taking evening classes. I wouldn't even trust Coca-Cola with classes in French, much less with something like chemistry. And would you want a company like Lehman Brothers teaching your child maths, or later economics?

Because those things should not be only given to the ones with money.
If you propose a system for health and education where people are obligated to have it and funded if they cannot afford it. But where the hospitals/schools are run privately. Then I'm all for it.
This is how it is done over here (with regards to healthcare). Insurance is mandatory and companies are not allowed to ban anyone from getting insured. This means they have to find a way to make profit in another way. It is not perfect, but it is certainly better than the system the US uses.
Why shouldn't the state regulate the free market a bit? They make sure companies don't polute the environment, don't unfairly screw customers, don't falsely advertise and all that shit. Why shouldn't they do the same things for healthcare or education?

Yes, wonderful. We had one of those where I used to live.
Company president decided what color your house was, how often you mow your grass, what sports your kids should be in. Fancy ideas the company president did not like? Skip them!
Napoleon, you should study history. What really happesn when education is privatized is that MOST people don't get that education. Many of those who do get it get only the barest basics that will allow them to take the most menial positions in the factories. (can't have the "fodder" competing with the executive kids, now can we?)

Erm. I hate to break it to you, but there isn't a Komissar in charge of painting homes, mowing your lawn, and running the local rugger/softball team. That's all privatized actually... and you get to have that done however you want really.

Yeah... I hope that didn't shock you too much. You can wave goodbye to Mr. Lenin now.

No, actually I do study it, and what history, economics and common sense all tell me is that private enterprise works better than State-run business.
Think about it. If the executive kids are given privileges (whatever that means), take your dollars elsewhere. I mean, the only reason the executives get to be executives is because you pay them to do things. You're the boss.
In State-run system, it's whatever [delete as appropriate] 51% of the degenerate and uneducated great unwashed/a corrupt oligarchy decide is best for you. The whole point of the market is that you get to choose whatever you like best amongst the options presented by companies competing for your dollars.
Don't believe me?
Google "Soviet Union". It'll be eye-opening, believe me.

What I find most hilarious in this thread is that someone paid to have that website put up. Capitalism in action, to make a statement!
That's right, capitalism making statements possible, a liberty not enjoyed in STALINIST RUSSIA or NAZI GERMANY or to whatever else people are comparing the six day old Obama administration.
