It also seems rather obvious that you are a half-wit.

Ok let me rephrase the overall question. Who was the greatest military mind ever but also had thier kingdom last after thier death?

Also alexander the great was a great strategist and tactician but he drove his men to death often outrunning his supply trains. The only reason he wasn't killed by his men was thier unyielding loyalty to him.

Why ask the question if you are just going to disqualify the answer?

Hitler is undercredited. His entire buildup of highways seen as economic development seconded as military highways for fast rapid movements of troops throughout the country to different fronts. He is potentially the most influential figure at causing the entire world to exit the worldwide depressions as well. If you haven't studied him more in depth he typically just sounds like some crazy person that had a lust for power and hatred for Jews (which is true, don't get me wrong).

So many of his moves are brilliantly planned out... I don't know if he can beat some of the old great ones though.

Then I believe Scipio Africanus would be at least one spot in front of him, after defeating Hannibal in the Battle of Zama. Another mention would be Phillip II of Macedon, Alexander's father.

A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

I doubt there's a single greatest strategist, all leaders have good and bad days. Just like everyone else. And some strategists might not even be leaders...

I'd put Sherman pretty high on the list. I find his methods and cause questionable, but the March to the Sea was well done on the tactical, strategic, and logistic levels. Of course, it would have been impossible to do in a less fertile country or without the incredible productive and transportation capacity of the North, but that doesn't denigrate the achievement.

I just went to scan that thread, and was confused when I couldn't see myself, or anyone named "Dinobot". Then I stopped scrolling so quickly, and saw "This post was made by Dinobot....foe...etc"

I feel like I could make a decent case for Mao as one of the shapers of irregular warfare, actually. Pretty awful person, but then, few of the greats were particularly decent.

Well done reading the question. ;)

He probably lost more battles than he won, and he invaded Russia in winter.

1st lesson you learn in military school: You don't invade Russia, let alone in winter, because you will lose 90% of your soldiers.

So some answers are Hitler, Napolean, Hannibal, Scipio Africanus, Phillip II of Macedon, Sherman, Patton, and Mao.
But most of these people were either great strategist and hated by the people or lucky and loved by the people

With Hannibal though he did win many victories over the romans, he was defeated by Scipio Africanus. Also after his defeat Hannibal tried to put in some new economic changes to help pay the tribute that Rome demanded and eventually went into voluntary exile.

Napolean was a great military mind but was defeated by Wellington at Waterloo which started him towards his death.Plus he introduced conscription which caused many of the french people to hate him after he lost.

Hitler was brilliant but also made some very simple mistakes such as attacking Russia and fighting on two fronts.

Having looked at what we've got so far, I'd say you have to at least put Caesar in the running. Plus he never ran into the eventual wall like some of the others mentioned (assassination aside).
