Doing something in moderation is not as easy as it sounds, when it comes to something so highly, physically addictive as nicotine. Anyone who has ever attempted to cut a serious addiction can testify to this.

Well Tim, I think what we have to do is not get addicted. I smoke cigarettes occasionally and cigars more often... but never more than a few times a year. I am aware that nicotine is addictive, so when ever I do smoke, I do so with my eyes open.

Moderation people! When used in moderation smoking makes you look cool. And sexy, Ladies. Ladies, trust me there is nothing more sexy than a woman smoking a cigar. If you are crushing a boy, let him catch you smoking one.

If I see people smoking (and I speak as an ex-smoker) my reaction is now "why the hell would you want to DO that?".
And it's not sexy, its smelly.

You see when I smoke a cigar it does not represent me sucking on a penis. Remember the Freud quote. It however is different with women. ;)

It's a totally different phenomenon. Absolutely. Basically, I think this schematic kinda gets it: So, you're smoking a cigar.
Do you do it often? Do you have a vagina? This is...
Yes. No. Possibly a problem, if you're hetero. You might actually want a penis in your mouth. Check with Barney Frank and get back to me.
No. No => Class.
Yes. Yes => Slut.
Yes. Yes => Classy slut.

I have never, in my entire life, ever smoked a ciggarette - apparently it seems that i am in a minority (around the people who i've met and enjoy the company of)

Having said that, however, I am a mere minute or two away (depending on how long it takes to finish this post) from smoking an epic bong because its friday afternoon and I feel like getting really high!!

Oh yeah!

In short - Ciggarettes, not cool. They stink, don't get you high, and cost too much. Everyone at work needs 'ciggy breaks' every couple of hours - it's really annoying

A few days after Christmas I was round my Dad's house looking after his cat. I noticed he had left behind a lighter and (somewhat oddly) one cigarette left in a packet on the shelf. Was it a test? I have no idea...

Anyway, I picked up the cig, and looked at it for about 30 seconds. Was I tempted? My dad's always been a heavy smoker...
But...I wasn't. It didn't do anything for me, so I put it back.

Seriously, I'm currently lobbying for taxbreaks on cigarettes because smokers cost the healthcare-industry far less than non-smokers.

Just cool? Dude looks positively cold! :D

Personally, I smoke cigarettes because I enjoy the taste and the feel of smoking. I am really starting to get annoyed with all those militant non-smokers out there who act as if they have any saying in what I put in my mouth. Don't get me wrong, I am all for banning smoking in public buildings, but if a bar owner wants his customers to smoke and he is being truthful about it, then no one has the right to force him to ban smoking in his bar. This blatant disregard for the freedom of the individual is advocated the loudest by the same bleeding hearts who are also loudest in defending 'democracy' and 'democratic values'. The only really 'democratic value' is assigning control of most of the political power to the dumbest masses available.

That is the cool thing about smoking - by lighting a cigarette you are showing those around yourself that, as long as hypocrisy is the measure of civilization, you don't want be considered civilized. Anyone got a light? 8-)

Actually, if the bar is operated by owners and has no employees, no problem. The problem arises when employees are exposed to the second hand smoke. Expecting an employee to waive the right to a smoke free environment is unreasonable. However, if the owner makes each employee an owner whether by given them a stock share or some other indicia of real ownership -- power on.

Oh my goodness people, Please take the time to consider the fact that there are people out there that arent heavy smokers. That there are people out there that only smoke in moderation. All those yucky pictures of people you see of smokers are 1 or 2 pack a day smokers.

There are those out there who can count on one hand how many cigarettes or cigars they have had in the last 6 months. Of course those who are addicted to tobacco have a problem, just like those who are addicted to alcohol or cocaine have a problem.

But please, do not believe into the hype that the man is feeding you. Smoking in moderation increases your rick of cancer no more than going to the beach on a sunny afternoon. Smoking in moderation is no different then drinking in moderation. These things aren't problems.

They aren't really health benefits either. So if someone chooses not to smoke, and doesn't care much about other people smoking (at least not in an enclosed space), what is the problem?

If you believe this load of crap, smoke. Please smoke as much as you want, we could use the tax dollars to pay for smoking related illnesses. However, don't bring you second hand smoke into a building, car, tent, or whatever that those of us who don't smoke inhabit.

Wait...so the risks of smoking are all just hype? Do you truly believe that if you only smoke on weekends, you are somehow "safe" from the effects?

Who cares what he believes. The only concern I have is if he has children and smokes in the house and car exposing the children. There are states that have laws prohibiting smoking in a car with children in the car. But if he only exposes himself and adults who consent, let him smoke.

Oh, I believe you should be able to smoke all you want to and agree with you about smoking around kids. But he is deluding himself if he thinks that since he isn't a pack a day smoker, he therefor isn't addicted and is somehow immune to the consequences. Certainly the more you smoke the higher the risk, but the ONLY risk-free choice is to not smoke in the first place.

Yes, but they are few, and far between, when compared to full-time, or reformed smokers. I think you grossly underestimate the addictive power of cigarettes.

He is not deluding himself, he is fucking with you. So long as he doesn't expose you, what do you care what his delusion is, anyway. It is a lot like religion. People can believe whatever they want, so long as they don't try to shove it down my throat or use my tax dollars to support it.

Out of the hundreds of smokers I've ever met, I could count on one hand the number who could count on one hand the number of smokes they've had in the last six months.

All of those were previously heavy smokers who had stopped and now succumb t temptation very ocassionally.

My point exactly! I would just like to add that a person who applies for a job of waiter in a bar that has a big 'SMOKING ALLOWED' sign in front is, to my mind, a consenting adult. Laws should protect people's right to choose whether or not they are going to expose themselves to tobacco smoke. But, today, it is more popular to design laws that protect people by taking away their right to choose and absolving them of responsibility for their own choices. Some people may like to live in a brain-optional society, but, personally, I don't feel morally obligated to respect the laws enforced by such a society.
