Re: Your first love - the non-Classic map you fell for
On the resolution I use (1600x1200), many maps (especially older ones) have a bad visibility/readability, since they are made in much lower resolution. Because of that, when I joined CC, I played Classic exclusively (since I new it by heart and wasn't dependable of what I could see). After ten or so games, I was ready for other maps.
My first (actually ETERNAL
) love has been Age of Merchants map. Even today, it's perhaps the very best map on CC, if you really count ALL (visibility/readability, logic of play, balance, beauty...)
About simple maps... It depends what degree of simplicity you demand. BY FAR the best plain map is Battle of Actium. If it isn't simple enough, I vote for Bamboo Jack. If you want simpler yet, I have two votes
a) for the best (though I don't like it very much) - World 2.1
b) for the loveliest - Tamriel

Paddy, did you think on Battle of Actium? If the answer is yes, then I'm not alone

Complex - American Civil War, if that's considered complex, otherwise Pearl Harbor.

Simple: Circus Maximus
Complex: World 2.1
I guess W2.1 isn't that complex, but it sure seemed to be deeply involving when I started.

Re: Your first love - the non-Classic map you fell for
Lots of AoR 2 fans - I never figured out how to play those properly, mostly because the people who DO know just trounce you before you can figure out how all the shiny buttons work.
Luckily, I do this to people in reverse on Arms Race! It's small, it's perfect for 1v1, and it's relatively simple once you understand what attacks what. Some of the best speed games are 4-player foggy chained Arms Race games, but that's personal opinion and a healthy win average talking.
Another simple one that got me early on was definitely Discworld. At first I thought the whole thing was sacrilege - Pratchett never drew a map, because as he very rightly pointed out, "Who cares? It's not real!" Of course, "Who cares" makes for a crappy map layout. So I'm glad it exists.

I really love Europe as a simple map.
Complexity-wise, I like games on Siege!, Oasis, and Waterloo.

For simple maps, Doodle Earth and Luxembourg are great for quick games; either 2 or 8-player.
The two-player is like a microcosm of two players slugging it out over a portion of a larger map.
The 8-player is a quick free for all. There's no room for 8 players on these maps!
It seems like most all games on these maps last less than 10 rounds.
For complex, Feudal War. This is the perfect map for 6-player, fog of war, no spoils, chained or adjacent reinforcements.
This map doesn't require unlimited reinforcements, because the drop is so even.
This map is also good in flat rate or escalating. The fog of war really adds to this map. It's good with fog of war off, too.
Feudal War is a great map. The only thing I would change would be some of the territory-naming, and maybe the numerical fonts on the mapboard.
ymmv
I like the Texas Wars and USA Apocalypse.
The one with the missile silos is interesting. On that one and Waterloo, a newbie can easily get stuck in a bombard-only position, and lose the game that way.

Complex, I dunno if I've really found one that I adore and intend to play lots on. Mibbes, the prison, waterloo, or the new one, forbidden city. There's still baout 30 maps I ain't played yet/

after my drunk speedgaming orgy, i dropped a lot of points, so the gain increases

Re: Your first love - the non-Classic map you fell for
world 2.1, since the first day it came out
its size and ease of operation make it one of the most fair maps on the site most of the time
though one turn may decide it, usually it is decided slowly, and can make for the longest battles, and reward the strongest strategies...and obviously...sometimes the best drop, spoils, or dice

Re: Your first love - the non-Classic map you fell for
First: Indochina. *Sigh* I swipe a TON of points in that map.....
Present: Berlin 1961. I just like how it looks and how the bonuses work
Don't really enjoy the "complex" maps. But I'll play them for the most part....if I have to

Simple: Europe - very clean, very colorful map.
Complex: Waterloo (this is one of those OMFG so many rules type maps but really gives an idea of what warfare must be like. Plus its Napoleon hehe)
