[Abandoned] - Map of Charlemagne's Empire

Number of countries = 31

Been looking through the other maps on the site and in development, and I thought a map of Charlemagne's Empire would be fun to play around with.

Bear in mind this is only a very quick mock up (although I would like to use the base map for the final version) and the colours, borders, continents and bonuses are only tentative ideas. Obviously the territories and continents will be named and everything else re-done smartly.

There are several countries which could be merged or split, depending on whether more or less terretories are needed. I realise 31 is probably not that good a number. What would be ideal?

Another idea would be to merge yellow and orange continents and make the bonus 7. What do you think of that?

Do any areas need impassable or one way borders?

Finally, upon Charlemagne's death his empire was split three ways (roughly along the lines of green+purple continents inherited by Charles the Bald/ orange, light blue + red was Kingdom of Lothaire/ yellow + dark blue were inherited by Louis the German) and these formed the rough areas of modern day france and germany. I was considering maybe a bonus for holding the grouped continents?

How about Gengish Khan's empire? That's in Asia...yeah...no one ever plays in asia though...lets play more in Europe... :)

Kidding. Empire maps can be interesting, but we've got quite a few Europe area maps. But if the community likes it... **Shrugs** Good luck,

I actually like the idea. Then again I love history and I am European so maybe that's why I love these kind of maps! ;)

Perhaps 36 regions would be a better number. I also like the idea of bonuses according to how the empire was divided after Charlemagne's death.

I think its a small enough part of Europe to work without being just another one of many europe maps.. Doesn't include areas such as scandinavia, the British Isles, or the Iberian peninsula(save maybe one country).

A map of Gengish Khan's empire would be interesting though.. Hmm.. I've been thinking about doing a map.....

But a few more countries would be better, 31 seems low..

I agree with evil pope, as it is a smaller portion of the area.

Also agree that the number is rather small. Look at the other 'small' maps on the site...and you realize they aren't played as often as the medium to large maps are.

Ok guys, heres the second (much better) draft. If theres no real interest at this point I'll call it a day, but I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

Still no impassable barriers and I think the continent bonus will need changing. I've added the successor kingdoms bonus. is that playable?

What do you think? Ok graphically? is it obvious enough where the playing area actually is or should the outside be a bit more faded. Still not added territory names, as I would like to wait until I return to uni to check up on a few (currently studying for a degree in history).

I'll comment more later...but right now it feels like you just colored areas on a map with a highlighter, a called it a gameboard....How did you make the map?

I like the idea, the map needs a lot of work though.

This is the original image

I do realise that its not really that different to the original map. I use photoshop. I've deliberately kept it quite similar to the original map because I llike the old fashioned detail. I tried it with a fully 'blank' game area and it just didn't look as nice to me. I can easily blank out various bits, its all layers in photoshop. I just like the general feel of playing accross an old fashioned map, similar to the Ireland map in style. I'll mock up a blanker version and you can see what you think.

Tried a bit of texture. Looks like too much to me.

like the idea, and you have a nice map to start from... my concern is that there are a other Europe variations either already in play or in the works; how many do we need?

Thats why I wanted to know if its worth carrying on. There certainly are a lot of europe maps. This one is of a pretty small area really, and I suppose the historical focus is what does it for me but if people think its just one of many pretty generic maps I'll try something else.

Personally (though I know everyone loves to encourage maps) I don't think this one is different enough to give it much appeal.

I like it

1 thing directly: the left territorie on Provincia, looks too small to house anything like name and number, merge it with the others

I think this map has lots of potential, but I'd like to see the map be made completely from your own artwork. I understand you want to keep the visual style, but there's no reason why you can't replicate that yourself. I guess I'd like to see some names and impassable borders before adding any more comments.

I have to ask though, why another Europe map? I thought everyone was sick of Europe!
