FWIW, consider me another member of "don't understand the overwhelming amount of love that #4 is getting" faction. It's not bad, but I don't understand how so many people thought it was so much better...

I can see that. And if it was a matter of which map is most ready for live play, then it would be #4, but as has been exhaustively discussed, none of these are final products... I'm wondering if people realize that conceptually at least a couple of these maps will be tweaked/revised.

Hello, everyone. I've been thinking that a good title for the map might be Midgård or one of the many spelling variants thereof. (In Beowulf, it's middangeard.) For those who don't know, Midgård is an old Germanic term for the world of humans. The literal translation is "middle enclosure," but it's usually translated as "mid-earth" or something similar.

Seeing as how the popular map #4 is in desperate need of a theme, perhaps something related to Norse mythology might work.

I really miss this map, even though I only played on it a few times. I'm hoping that when it comes back, I'll be able to imagine myself in a fantasy world, such as the ones described in the works of Lord Dunsany, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Robert E. Howard, and of course the epic of Beowulf. But not the epic of Gilgamesh, because after seeing map #3, I'm hoping that that one will get its own map.

YES. Add some dragons!

I agree with that.

Just my two cents in case anyone cares.

The simple elegance of the third one is fantastic, from the papyrus effect to the hieroglyphic font. It's an absolute travesty that it's not winning, let alone in last (what!).

looks like gimil's holiday season started early... ;)

Since I'm a participant in this competition (I can safely say that now because my map has been pretty much eliminated) I shouldn't make any decisions about round 2, but if the participating mapmakers are wondering about round 2 I would guess gimil would be OK with using the same deadline we are using for Central America: January 7.

I personally don't see the need for anonymity. People are going to tell their friends which map is theirs anyway and if they're going to vote based on that solely then that's going to happen no matter what we do. When you consider that most of the votes come from random people, it probably doesn't matter. Also, allowing a thread for people to post their drafts and get responses wouldn't be a big deal either since the majority of votes come from randoms and who cares if we see a prior draft? Perhaps the mapmaker himself/herself will care because it gives the competition an idea of what they have to beat but that should be up to the mapmaker.

The only other benefit of anonymity is the fun in guessing which mapmakers did what map. Though, this time around it was quite easy because of the number of participants and knowing they had to be "experienced" mapmakers.

I think it's less an issue in this competition than in the other... like you said we pretty much figured this one out from the start anyway. If gimil is fine with opening the thread up for the next three weeks I'd say do it.

the anonymity itself might be a lesser issue since they're basically all known to regulars but the issue of getting help from more than one mind at once is more of an issue in the Central America competition. one person sees someone's comment and can expand on it whereas right now if they're asking people for help it's a sole one-on-one thing which in general is a bigger "problem" for people who haven't quenched a map.

if the mapmaker doesn't mind everyone seeing their map, I don't see why it matters if a thread is made to show their progress and get more help (or just being able to post in the competition thread). or just have them send it to you. I realise it's late in the game but if they've approved adding the guy who didn't make it on time, surely they'd approve this. it helps everyone. yes it benefits those more able to put more work (and sooner) in but that'd be a benefit they'd have anyway.

Round 1 is over.

Congratulations to everyone who entered. I have decided to take the top three of the four entries into the next round. That means that sadly entry 3 by [player]oaktown[/player] will not continue into the next round.

All participants should recieved a PM concerning round two. All participant have a deadline of 11:59pm (GMT) on Wednesday 7th January 2009 to submit their next draft to [player]gimil[/player] for round 2 of the competition. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to leave feedback for those left in the competition.

Sessions greetings folks and may the nest map maker win,
gimil

aHA! Knew it. Oaktown I still think that you should make this into a map on its own, and I bet others will agree with me.

I do as well, it has the potential to be a good map (as you have done before) but I don't think it fit this competition.

Believe me pamoa - we know about fitting armies in the regions. Have no fears.

Absolutely concur. Great theme, great graphics, could be an amazing map. Don't let Gilgamesh die, oaky!

I agree, keep Gilgamesh going. It's a great idea.

I suspect that if we were able to post a second choice then #3 would not have come last in the poll. I'm staggered it did so poorly.

i think 4 could use a theme.

maybe 3 could be quenched too after the gameplay is changed around a bit? it is a really cool map with a great theme, something very different from the usual historic, geographic, etc. also it seems fitting to replace one great epic with another.

So true.

I'm saddened to say this but I think my beloved #2 probably won't make it past round 2. It's an awesome map but it doesn't exactly relate to the middle earth style people seem to want. #4 will probably take this comp, but I hope #2 will keep going on it's own to give CC a much needed pirate map. Also, "no" beard needs to live on....I mean it's freaking "no" beard.
