What on earth would any atheist believe in if it wasn't evolution?

That we're still waiting for a biological Galileo, just like Dawkins still thinks we need to wait for a cosmological Darwin.

I don't see any need to wait to take up the fact that evolution is how live on earth originated and developed.

That's not to say all intelligent people mustn't see this need either.

Double negative -- good way to be ambiguous and foggy.

Seems to me that there's a very limited number of possibilities when it comes to the origins of life. Given that life exists on this planet and you are unsure of its origin, the only possible explanations are that
A: something put us on this planet. This accounts for Creationism and Scientology. It's really only a dodge though, as that doesn't explain the origins of life, it just says that life didn't originate on this planet.
B: life came from something that wasn't living on this planet. This would go along with the Theory of Evolution.
C: life always existed on this planet. This isn't even logically coherent. If life has always existed, it would have been here since either the "start" of the universe or an infinite amount of time. But, if it has existed for an infinite amount of time then how has that much time passed? The concept of "infinite time" doesn't really mix well with the mechanics of time.
The start of the universe bit is the only option aside that seems to not be entirely outrageous, and it still seems very odd.
Re: Logic dictates that there is a God!
Those are not the only possibilities. It is possible that life began on this planet of its own accord. There is interesting work that hypothesizes that DNA, and subsequently life, developed from naturally occuring chemicals between the layers of mica stone. Chemicals and stone to life.

I like to play devil's advocate(noticed the pun?
) so I'll take the pro-creator side for now.
I skipped 290 pages so I might have missed something, but here goes anyway:
Evolution makes sense, life can form from un-organic life, blah blah blah but how do we explain the formation of the universe? Sure we have the big bang theory, but what formed the big bang? Why can't there have been an intelligent creator that designed a universal law and system that eventually formed into what we know now?

Ahhh, give him some credit. he is a bit more intellectual than Rambo -- wait -- Rambo is rich from making movies -- well -- let's just say Rambo is smarter if not more intellectual.

Not to sound like an ignoramus or anything, but we're working on it.
The formula to date works better WITHOUT there being a GOD. At least with the accepted version of events, one day we can actually answer that question. Besides, you could ask that very question of a GOD.
I don't understand this new Christian arguement of "Yes everything evolved, yes the big bang was real, but there was still a GOD." That's saying two opposite things. "Sure everything has been proven to happen naturally, but that's because our GOD made it that way."

I think that was implied in B. Or at least, it is a theory for the origin of life about the same as B.
Exactly how it happened is up for debate, but one must note that that has nothing to do with the theory of evolution. Origin of life is not a part of the theory.

I know that was the cave-man's initial explanation for anything unknown. "If I don't understand it, god did it." However, we have learned a lot since then. We now know that the world is not flat, the earth orbits around the sun. There is more than one galaxy. The universe is expanding at an expanding rate. etc.etc.
Science is all about the quest for answers to the unknown, and the process has been accelerating ever since the Arabs invented Algebra. So join in hte quest, join modern man.

My two cents.........
"You think that it's not magic that keeps you alive? Just 'cause you understand the mechanics of how something works, doesn't make it any less of a miracle...which is just another word for magic. We're all kept alive by magic, Sookie. My magic's just a little different from yours, that's all."
