Jules Verne - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Chapter 12, I believe. An excellent work.

Hmmm... something easy, to start off.

"The Evidence of the Police-Inspector"

Should it become necessary, I assume the method of hinting in this thread will be further chapter headings? I'll put another up if you haven't gotten it in a day or so... though I really expect it'll be faster than that.

I'd hazard a guess at one of Conan-Doyle's novels?

Not Conan-Doyle, although you're on the right track...

"The Evidence of the Mannequin"

Eigidansei, my apologies... I had no intention of being rude. However, to be fair, The Nutcracker is, properly, a ballet, with literary adaptations, and "Strange Happenings" isn't exactly uncommon as a chapter heading. I just happen to know my Verne better than my Tchaikovsky.

English author? Then it almost has to be Agatha Christie, but which novel?

Not Agatha Christie, but you are correct that the author is female. And that it's a mystery, but that was fairly obvious by the titles. ;)

"The Evidence of the Gigolos"

Man, I really thought this author was better known. Born 1893, died 1957.

Author considered a translation of Dante's Divine Comedy her best work.

"The Evidence of Trouble Somewhere"

Guys, I'm running out of author clues. I'm going to have to start telling about the story.

Alright, let's see. The book is part of a series of murder mysteries with a known detective figure, and opens with the woman that detective figure intends to marry out on a walking holiday, where she discovers a body.

The author is Dorothy Sayers, the series is about Lord Peter Wimsey, but I don't know which novel... I've only read Strong Poison and The Nine Tailors, and I don't remember those chapters.
