Also if this was added I'm sure a lot of people would leave cc

There would still be "red," blue", "green" armies. You just wouldn't know which player was red, which player was green, and which player was blue.

Fantastic idea. Instead of the player names, just put the colors. The players would be listed as they are now, but with uncolored text.

I can't wait for this to happen. I'm sick of being teamed up on because of my rank.

That way you cannot discriminate against certain opponents because you won't know who they are.

Great idea.. I also agree there should be more opportunities for us to discriminate based on colour

This isn't a good idea for terminator games. The purpose of terminator is to get points off every player you kill, so it's typically the best strategy to maximize your points won. The happens by eliminating those who outrank you.

Maybe have it as an option for a game, not specifically that it has to be played like this.

Good idea, been discussed before, supposedly on the to-do list.

Threads merged:

Anonymous Games *To Do* - posts 12 to 15 December 2006 - first post here
Anonymity function - posts 11 to 14 December 2008 - first post here

With thanks to Incandenza for pointing out the existing thread.

Is there something about mid December that makes people want anonymity ?

Having reviewed the thread I really like the idea, though I have to say I think that there are more interesting gameplay updates that could be done first ...

If would, as some have said, need to be an option rather than a standard setting.
And I think the setting would need a catchier name ...
"Secret Generals", "Hidden Commanders" ... Thoughts ?

Oh, I'm right there with ya, I think it's a great idea... it would add a whole different level of complexity to things... and the easiest way to do things is to have players listed (both on the right and in game chat) as "Player 1", "Player 2", etc.

Maybe it'll stay on the 'to do list' for another year- it'll give new meaning to getting noobed.

I'd have to give up my trademark dashes. :o

This sounds like the 'Fog of Players' suggestion... in either case, I think there would be a place for it, but possibly as an extra option?

yes this is almost identical to my FoP idea, here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=49707&hilit=fog+player+fod+player+owenshooter+fog+owenshooter+suggestions&start=45

i recommend checking it out to read the problems and issues already brought up about this idea and how they were addressed. also, a mod may want to consider merging these threads.

Anonymous Games

Maybe this board could provide a new feature: Anonymous Games.

That way, all player IDs - and their rankings - would be invisible until the game end.

I disagree with this.

Often, in an escalating game, you look at ranks and know who is going to be the one to suicide. So you more your troops away from that area or kill the person in that area. This way, that low rank suicides into someone else. This strategy works 90% of the time.

True for any other game type actually, as well.

My 2 cents.

that could part of the fun though

you have to just watch their moves and guess what rank they are

it would be fun in terminator too

Also, I'm not saying this would be the default. It should be an option though.

I started a thread about the doodle earth 8-player, and asked about attacking the highest-ranked players first. Several players with points read me the riot act for that. Afterwards, I realized it worked both ways. There are games where the higher-ranked gang up on the cooks.

So all of this - competing ranks within games - seems like a sort of point of contention on this website.

Having the anonymous option would allow for people to play without knowing rank.

I rarely see one rank gang up on another because of their rank.

I don't think it is much of a problem.

The only way I've seen how ranks really matter within a game is when there are one or two players with a much higher rank than the other players, with the 'regular' players thinking "watch out for the brigadier", that kind of thing.

I think it's a good suggestion, but I'm not sure how many people would choose it though.

i'm sure the people who actually take the time to read about farmers are also probably easily recognized by the farmers... there are only like 500 people who use these forums really.

actually these seems like a perfect addition/change to the Fog of War concept
all fog games should mask the players and their ranks

with the current stats and all, fog now only hides army numbers anyhow

I think it's an interesting twist on the FoW. Not vital to gameplay, and doesn't really add much to the drama, but increases the "foggyness" of the FoW.

I just came up with this suggestion independently and for a different reason. Good thing I did a search before posting it as a new topic :D

Anyway, I propose the same idea: add an option for anonymous game type where it shows you who is in the game, but you can't tell which color they are until the end of the game.

How I came about this idea: recently 2 of my friends and I have been playing 3p games. We're doing a marathon, starting with the first map and trying to get through all of them one by one (3 games at a time, each of us starting a game each, with whatever settings we want). After a few games we realized that playing with just 3 players continuously, we started to learn some pattern associated with the other 2. It turns out that that fact affects how we play quite a good bit.

Aside from some pros and cons posted above, the Anonymous Game option would help alleviate this problem for us and those people who often play with the same friends. Please consider it :)
