Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
since there are two comps, how will the voting work?
Will it be one big poll that holds both contests, or two separate threads?

Yeah, since gimil accepted the centerscape entries we're waiting on him to post that thread... my mistake perhaps for setting the deadline as midnight, gimil-time.

I hope will be seeing them tomorrow morning then (gimil noon-time)

Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
Alright, now that the maps are posted and folks are looking and voting, it has been suggested that we allow updates. I'm still coming up to speed on the idea and how it would work, but I'm listening. At first I thought edbeard wanted to allow folks time to present their maps prior to the start of voting, but now I'm hearing that we should allow mid-voting changes - as often as one per day - based on the feedback that mapmakers are getting. Am I hearing this right?
I agree that allowing changes at this point would probably result in higher quality maps, but given that we've already begun and that this constitutes something of a rules-change, whatever system we come up with should be agreed to by the mapmakers... if somebody can suggest something quickly I will PM them and see if there are any objections.
I would also like to remind you that any changes at this point requires me to upload and update the images - I don't really want to have to keep checking my inbox every hour to keep up with constant changes. Maybe one change, due by a specific time on Saturday?
Next time I set up a competition this will be on my radar and we can plan for changes in advance.

Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
I don't see a problem with it, though I understand the workload factor for oaktown. I think the competition could benefit from at least 1 update during voting.
Asi it stands, 3 maps have a lot of votes, and look likely to go through, the other 2 are short on votes. I think the competition could hot up if we allowed an update mid-voting, though the rules would have to be set out. I think if people have made the effort of putting together a map, but it hasn't got many votes, they should be given the benefit of the doubt, and allowed an update to woo the crowd (of course, this update should be available to all mapmakers to keep the playing field even).

Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
Actually i say yes it is a good idea
Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
I don't think there is a need for updating during round-1. Personally - I'm not voting based on a finished map, but a theme or style. I know there's going to be a round-2, where the updates will be applied based on feedback received so far. I really don't think allowing updates will change anything - I can almost guarantee that it will not change my vote.
Since the accomplished map makers were not in the central america comp, we could have been asked (PM'd) to provide feedback before the deadline. I would have looked at someones map and given some critique.

Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
I think any map with a certain number of votes (above 10? 20? Some number we decide based on the total number of votes) should progress to round 2 and have a chance to make changes in between.
Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
i think that its a good idea to let people update their entries.

Is gim still having problems with his internet connection? Aren't the centerscape maps suppose to be posted today?

They are supposed to be posted today.....
I think its about 3:12 PM where he lives, so maybe he just hasn't had his CC-time yet.
Most of his posts around here are closer to 5pm his time, so I'm guessing the images will be up in an hour or two....

Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
No sign of life in the gimil camp
For what it's worth, I'm not sure there's a need for mid-round voting, particularly as it is a phased competition. Think of it as an early X-factor round, where your voting to save your favourites, rather than to pick an outright winner.
Any changes that occur mid-vote are always going to be contentious, as it might give prefernece to the mapmaker with the most spare time, rather than the best idea/draft, as people may be more likely to respond to something they can see devleloping?
Perhaps for a future competition, we could set a deadline for initial submissions. Phase 1 could then be a non-voting period for responding to feedback etc. and then we could have the voting round(s)?

Re: Holiday Mapmaking Competitions!
just now reading back on the entire conversation for this (its difficult reading it from 2 threads....
) and i keep my earlier statement that i like the idea, but i like someones idea that the contestants should be allowed to make one update to their projects.
