We also have to reflect on the end of an era.
Saddam was the last of the great dictators: Franco, Mussolini, Stalin, and all the rest.
We have officially run out of good, old fashioned despots to overthrow and condemn. Now all we are left with is communist dictators (Castro, Kim Jong Il, etc.) and fundamentalist muslim clerics.
A moment of silence please, for the death of the ODs (original despots).

genocide is probably one of the highest crimes i can think of. it is right up there with terrorism, suicide bombers, serial killers , killers and child molesters.
to me these are the most dispicable acts that any human can commit.
they say that history repeats itself. i believe this statement to be true.
Croatians vs Serbians ,hootos & tootoos, the mass killings and torture of Jews throughout history by various parties and way to many others that have committed genocide through the years.
i just don't understand why there is so much hatred and evil in this " civilized world"
they fill up the prisons and, our tax dollars keep these individuals feed, clothed and provide shelter for them.
I personally believe that people that commit these crimes need to be executed. not kept health & happy in prison.
Saddam shoud have been chained to something and stoned by the victims families he caused so much pain to.
hanging is quick. too good for him.
the end. i got it out of my chest. thank you.
ugh, the death penalty, thank god we don't have it here, i reckon scum like that need to be exiled to a place a long way away, maybe they could work as astronauts, on badly built rockets, signing one of those "we cannot be responsible if" contracts, hehehe...

Rap music is being listened to by 97% of teenagers, if you're one of the 3% of teenagers that actually listen to real music, then put this in your signature.

I think the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health would agree with you, considering that their researchers think it's closer to 600,000.
Link to a Murdoch rag for you:

yeah I'm aware that estimates range from 30000 (US gov) to 600000, i was trying to post somewhere in the middle there, the point is on raw numbers who is responsible for more suffering?

Communists have a history of violence.
Fidel- Cuban Missle Crisis
Kim- YOu live in a cave if you don't know
USSR- world domination goal, oppression, cold war

Saddam was just a tinpot wannabe Stalin, fancied himself the saviour of the nation, and crafted his cult of personality after Stalin's (he had the same goddamn moustache for crying out loud).
Great dictators exploit the resources and slave labor of their own countries and the ones they conquer in order to establish their horrifically glorious legacies. Iraq went to shit once US aid was cut off.
Saddam's Iraq during the 1990s is a good example of a country cannibalizing itsself.

Not just cannibalizing itself, but being embargoed - very effectively, too, in that they got no materials for weapons of mass destruction.
How can anybody think that Hussein's death is worth celebrating, now that 80 people die every day in Iraq? Iraq is 10 times smaller than the US, but that is more violent deaths than in the US every day.

Firstly, "we" didn't kill him. He was tried in an Iraqi court before an Iraqi tribunal and the death sentence was meted out by Iraqis. Secondly, if done properly where the neck is broken and the spinal cord severed, hanging is as humane of a death as anything else. If it's botched, they strangle and die of asphyxiation and that's not so nice. From the looks of the photos, it appears to have been done correctly.
this parts me... screwed up the quote thingy.. o well..
actually its umm let me think its if the rope is to short he strangles... if its to long his head pops off... yaaa there is a special formula to how to figure out the correct length sooo yaa its either that way or just switch it around...

According to the BBC, the rope snapped his spinal cord, and he died instantly. But now the Sunnis are vowing revenge. Whatever happened to realpolitick?
Here's what I would have done had I been the Iraqi "government" in concert with the American Neocons who wanted a stable Mesopotamian oilfield:
1. Try Saddam for causing everything evil, including the Colorado blizzards and that tornado that displaced Dorothy out of Kansas. Katrina and the tsunami? Yeah.
2. Sentence him to death with much fanfare
3. Break him out of prison and give him asylum in a country that would never extradite him (this is to prevent the Sunnis from making him into a martyr so as to avenge him)
4. The new Iraqi government continually demands his extradition (to keep the Shiites happy) to no avail (to keep the Sunnis happy).
5. If Saddam gets too talkative on the matter, we send in a sniper and POP! He dies, but we make it look like Sagida (his wife) hired a contract killer for a different kind of revenge.

"Liberating innocent villagers to be free"? That doesn't mean anything. Also it's tautological. Please let's have no more unthinking flagwaving rhetorical bullshit.
I don't have any sympathy for him, of course. But capital punishment is barbaric, outdated and wrong. And it was a show trial.
BUt this OP is hardly surprising - in 2005, 94% of all state executions took place in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and.... the USA!

China- 1.4 Billion people, politically unstable.
Iran- Very, very politically unstable.
Saudi- A dangerous place. My uncle went there and the plane he was in was almost shot down.
USA- A smaller minority out of the four named, known for liberty and justice.
