The best threads are the ones that have a very narrow scope and go on and on and on for pages while people make the same arguments and give the same examples. Now that is great reading.

And jokes have no place here.

Actually I would say the best threads have fairly narrowly defined boundaries, as that helps to prevent or at least limit repetitiveness. (you may have been sarcastic but I felt like a serious post).

Signed, but I want to make a note to my fellow signers:

I recently learned that twill's definition of spam is thus: "posting with the sole intention ... of being annoying." This means that from his and the mods' perspectives, they aren't being strict and ruining our harmless fun... we're actually engaging in a sort of battle with them, trying to bug the management of this forum for no reason other than we don't like them. So they lock our threads, because they can't just sit by and let us essentially troll the forum itself.

I'm not saying we're wrong, or that they are. It's this (read slowly): The only reason they're acting as if they're unreasonable, is because they think we're unreasonable. The only reason we're acting as if we're unreasonable, is because we think they are. Both sides are being idiots.

That's my input on the situation.

I'd also say that I'm in favor of less strict regulation of spam rather than no regulation. So that it can still to an extent protect your narrow threads from complete and utter spam.

I have a similar analysis. I do agree that both sides seem to be escalating this. However, since the mods are the ones with the real power in this dynamic, they are the ones who are ultimately responsible. If they didn't act like this so often, sure there would be complainers (there always are), but they wouldn't be a true nuisance.

But my point is, both sides are "in the right." From our perspective, they're acting stupid. But from theirs, they're doing the only thing possible in response to what they think we're doing.
The only way for this to be fixed now is for us to make sure the mods realize that our intention isn't to tear down all semblance of order on the site.

We especially need to make sure they know we aren't just trying to annoy them. Because that misconception (which we've done nothing to ease) is the source of all the problems.

I essentially agree with your conclusion. But, it should be the mods' onus to realize that most of us just want them to leave us alone. Especially when threads and arguments like this are out there (and this argument isn't old, they just ignore them because they're usually said while complaining about a specific lock).

No specific lock here and now. No, the people are just rising up to make their voices heard. They can't deny us now!

Eh, NOT SIGNED.

I don't get it... the NYB is the least modded forum on here, after FW. Clapper does an awesome job, IMO. It seems this is a petition to get rid of modding alltogether in the NYB(because there is already so little), but really, Clapper has an already excellent sense of judgment. Speaking as someone who has had a thread locked in the NYB, this place is run just fine.

Juan's been added to disagree, which is rather surprising considering that he was spamming threads just earlier today. :o

But (I might be wrong here), I think he is looking into the purpose of the thread a little too much. I don't think any of us want the mods to stop moderating, rather we'd prefer them to moderate when the community at large calls for moderation. There is a limit, as Ditocoaf pointed out, to what is appropriate, but it isn't easy to draw the line of what is and isn't allowable. This line should not be defined by an arbitrary authority figure, but rather the community that is being watched over.

The CC forums is divided up in the first place because we all, at some level, recognize this. Different sorts of people like to have different sorts of conversations (and some people like to have all sorts of different conversations ;)), and we recognize this by sorting out what type of posts go where. What does and doesn't contribute to a community shouldn't be decided by an individual of the community but by the community itself.

Sorry for saying the same thing twice, but I just wanted to clarify my thoughts on the matter.

I'm just unpredictable, and irrational. You never know who's side i'm gonna take. ;)

I don't see any problems with the modding in the NYB. Arbitrary or not, I do see Clapper as one of us... I'm not really sure what this is about  cauze I haven't seen her make any weird decisions that I wouldn't have made myself.... And she's our mod.

I would like to say that I didn't even recieve a warning for that, which strengthens my belief that Clapper is one of us awesome NYBers.

And I've posted porn, flame outside of FW, spammed and just about broke every rule on the guidelines that I haven't received warnings for... It's really like getting pulled over for speeding - you never know when a warning is going to come.

Stick me on the big list, obv.

Then why make a petition for less modding? Your a prime example of what I'm talking about. I'm not being convinced that there is a need... If anything, this can only lead to more crackdowns as we are so lawless that we challenge the little authority that there is.

mandyb wrote:I agree with heavy. We did have a 'serious business' thread over at NOTA in which people could discuss the more...well, serious topics without the interuptions, but the chat forum was definitely the busier of the two.

It's like if you go to the pub with your mates - your conversation flows from serious to lighthearted to funny to downright daft and back again. That's the way normal chit-chat works.
And if the people are happy with it like this then why not give them it?

On this, I propose (if it has not been proposed already or already exists) that Spamalot be given a separate forum from the non-CC specific discussion forum. If people want to engage in serious discussions, then we should be allowed to have those discussions without "spam" and thread de-railment (HC, arrogance is too strong a word, but it works), while at the same time if people want to blabber nonsence, I see no harm if they do so without smothering good topics with said nonsence.

That's a true point. The things I have been warned before have actually been pretty minor compared to other posts I've made that clearly break the guidelines. Receiving warnings like the one Mandalorian recently received as an example Flaming outside FW seem to be more common.. whilst other posts with much worse flaming get ignored. I once received one for posting "burn the witch", which was a joke and this was perceived as a flame outside flame wars.
