Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
the only thing worth remembering about 9/11 is remembering the loss of someone you knew if they were involved in it. as an event in history, it's not that significant

Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
So if all of this is true, why do you have to point out all of that shit today? Now? I can take this crap any other day. But today it truly does hit a nerve.
You think I don't know our government's response was completely fucking stupid?
You think the 9/11 Troofers don't ignite a visceral response in me 10 times more severe as that you're assuming I feel now? If only you knew of some of the fist fights I've been in, the bars I've been tossed out of, cause some prick from middle America decided to stump on about 9/11 Troof, or that prick frenchman who told me we Americans deserved the attack. Well, I think he deserved his broken nose, then.
Haven't we all been over this ground a thousand times before? Heavycola makes a valid point, but it's important to remember also that it's a fine line, and today of all days, why fucking even joke about the Troofers, or our asshole leaders? Why remind us all of how the day is tarnished, and all of those people who we wished could be laid to rest as heroes, or at least as victims, become in the shill pieces in a game of comedy (or hey-hey-look-at-my-documentary attention jockeying)?
Again, I ask, how often do people make jokes about Bloody Sunday?
Just f*ck off, the lot of you. Or else grow a pair and come lampoon 9/11 all you want in lower manhattan today. I'd love to see it.

Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
Let's keep things under control in here shall we?
For some, September 11th is a tough day, and will be for a long time, for others it did not have much of an impact.
I for one, was sitting in my senior English class in high school when I watched the second tower fall.
Now, let's keep it respectful and civil.
Loverbots... ROLL OUT!!

If you weren't there, you can't understand. If you weren't there, you might think joke threads and conspiracy theory jokes are funny. They're not. If you've never watched a person die, engulfed in flames, if you've never watched someone jump out of a window, arms flailing, only to land with a dull thud on the pavement, a thin pink cloud instantly puffing up from the body while the rest of the corpse splatters out like a pizza that falls top end onto the floor.
If you haven't seen a woman stumbling around like a zombie, covered in concrete dust, grasping her left arm at the elbow, where her forearm used to be, the blood mixing with the gray dust, trying to put a tourniquet on her.
If you haven't ever been in a warzone, you couldn't possibly comprehend. No matter how many pithy or seemingly witty lampooning jokes you can make, it doesn't change, for a second, the way you would all respond had you actually been there.
Those of you making comments or jokes only prove to me and others that you weren't there, and most likely don't know what it's like to watch people get brutally slaughtered. I'd be curious to know if you'd be so cool and collected and able to make jokes at other people's expense if you were trapped in one of those towers, the flames making everything unbearably hot, the air thin, the sky clogged with thick black clouds of smoke, making it impossible to find an escape, if there even was one to be had.
Jeeze, calm down Hammy McOverIntense.
It's like you think terrorism didn't even exist before 2001. Anyone over 20 in England has seen dozens of bombings and attacks, from the Irish to the Libyans to various Muslim extremists, bombing everything from planes to buses to shopping centres to army barracks. Oh, and Manchester. And London gay bars.
Don't get all twatty about the one major incident in your entire history ok? No-ones saying it wasn't horrible, all terrorist attacks are horrible, but you seem to think the whole world changed after 9-11.
it didn't, you just caught up.
Wrong, you're jumping to conclusions. OF course other people's suffering counts, you guys are the ones too myopic not to back off from something still fresh in the minds of those who witnessed it.
You don't see me making jokes threads about Darfur, or Ireland, or any other place where there is horrible violence going, or has gone on, or suffered some horrible terrorist attack.
You act as if you THINK the only thing I'd notice is when it happened on my shores. You sir, are the douche bag here, not me. My only statement was that it's not funny to make these jokes about 9/11, and if you doubt me about that, please, by all means, go down to the WTC site today, and repeat them to the bystanders to your hearts content.
I doubt you'll make it more than 5 minutes, you arrogant cunts.
Suddenly the wildly disproportionate American military response to 9-11 is explained.
I don't want to offend you, clearly you see 9-11 as epoch making, so I'll just say this. All terrorism is abhorrent. It's also common. It's part of the world we live in and I'm certainly not going to stop looking at the world in the way I do because of it.
If you really want to treat 9-11 as some sort of religious date, separate and above from all other terrorist attacks ever, then fine, that's up to you.
But you don't have the right to call people cunts just because they can laugh at the absurditys of the world and you can't. You'll be one of the things they can laugh at.

So then where are all of your threads about other terrorist attacks? Mocking the victims?
You keep assuming I think it's some big fucking epoch date in global history, when I've never said that. It is a day, however, for me and many others, that remains permanently frozen in the details of our memory.
And if you ever witness a warzone, you will know what I'm talking about.
So why don't you go make jokes about some UK terrorist attack.

Well, it took me 5 seconds to find this on the Glascow Airport attack.
Newsflash...
The two men arrested in connection with the Glasgow terror attack have been named as:
Singed Majeep
Maheed Sonfayer
I don't want to argue anymore, I feel like I'm offending you and that's just not what this is about.
I think humour is an essential part of being human. No-ones making jokes about the victims, but fat blonde fugly women are fair game. You just need to calm down.

Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
It's bad enough the victims have to be used and abused by the government in the name of expansionist aims.
But to use them for comedy, from the same people who had been criticizing the government for using the victims to justify unjustifiable military action, well, isn't that worse?
Again, please, go down to lower Manhattan today and make as many 9/11 jokes as you'd like. Mock anything and everything surrounding the day, from the military action to the troofers, to anything else. But I promise you, today, everyone will be thinking about that day in 2001, NOT WHAT HAS COME AFTER.
So you make all of your jokes, you make all of your rationalizations, and you see how forgiving the mob of New Yorkers will be on your face.

But brits especially do have a habit of laughing at dreadful things like disasters and war and famine and bombs and AIDS.
Here's one for instance I heard after the Glasgow airport affair:
There's a new feast day - "Ramavan". It's a moveable feast.
I heard jokes about the Lockerby tragedy, and the Fred West serial murders too.

Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
Oh wow...
There was me thinking that enough time must have passed to allow me to poke a bit of fun at the obsessive thread-making and chest-beating festival that's occurred annually for the last 6 years. 'Perhaps' I thought, 'people might finally be able to have a laugh about the overblown yearly public display of remembrance; to consider the absurdity of having a national 4 minutes of silence and a day of headline grabbing chest-thumping to commemorate a single isolated terrorist attack, when in Europe similar events are simply accepted as being consigned to history'. How wrong I was.
Silly of me to think for one moment that people might think that it was ok to gently mock those that still feel the need to compulsively buy NYFD memorabilia on a yearly basis, or those who still think that a mass display of conspicuous patriotism is the only way to do justice to the memories of 911. Good grief, come to think of it, how on earth was I mistaken enough to think that we might be able to have a laugh at the expense of those that begin the same 'troofer' caterwauling year on year?
Seriously guys, this "You are violating the memories of victim's suffering!!!" stuff is just crazy-talk. All we're finding amusing is the insanely overblown public recollections of 911, not the actual death and injury that occurred on the day itself. Calm down and stop imagining us as ghouls and corpse mockers... we're just laughing at the media, not at the injury.

what's wrong with making light of something completely removed from you? it's better than getting all worked up about it. if there's a serious lesson to be learnt from something (and in the case of most serious incidents there is nothing new to be learnt) then people will get that, you don't need to go all mopey about it just to prove to everyone that you understand the significance of something

pimpdave wrote:But to use them for comedy, from the same people who had been criticizing the government for using the victims to justify unjustifiable military action, well, isn't that worse?
Seriously, who's been making jokes about the victims?
Look, this was obviously a lot more real for you at the time if you were living in lower manhattan at the time, but it has affected all of us to some degree or other. Just because it happened in your city doesn't give you ownership or copyright, and assuming it does just leaves you open to the mockery you mistakenly believe is aimed at the victims.
You probably deride the troofers for the same reasons as most other people, but some of us laugh at them rather than deck them. As for the cartoon, perhaps it is suggesting at some level that if we are to learn from it constructively we need to stop being so kneejerk about it, 7 years later, that we punch tourists in the face and call 10 strangers 'cunts' (or, indeed, invade afghanistan).
Just a thought.

Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
9/11 was a terrible event in history. As also is every terrorist attack that has caused loss of life. The sheer numbers of loss of life mean that there are a lot of people who are in some way connected to somebody who knew or lost a loved one. One of my best friends lost her husband that day while he was away in america working. He had gone to work early to impress his bosses, to this day she still cannot talk about the phone call she had with him after the towers had been struck. Her pain today is unbearable. So my hearts go out to everybody who like her who is remembering a loved one on this poignant day.

I'm informed that the minutes represent the two moments of plane+tower impact, and the two moments in which both towers fell (sorry, I mean "pancaked quicker than freefall speed go back and re-read")

Re: Obligatory 911 Thread
So then please, create some threads about a terrorist attack you witnessed, in your country.
Plus, if you really want to know how people remember 9/11, the ones who were directly affected by it, anyway, it's to not even talk about it.
Usually we just get drunk together, maybe tell stories about one of our buddies who died that day. But for the most part, we're quiet about it. The rest of the world falls into either two extremes, the chest thumping patriots or the mocking fools. Both of which are exploiting our loss for their amusement.
So please, everyone, exploit a loss from your own region, before you start picking on the loss in NYC.
