Landgrab doesnt have that problem;).. working AI makes it hard to care as you still get to play the game. I think thats a good selection to the deadbeat problem. I think if we do this, then we have to also make it so that the teammate doesnt get the deadbeat teammates armies..

That's how it would've been if i were under this rule

Well, if your friends already play at this site and like this one? Then you would have to join this one and play 5 games here first...

and also if a player are so stubbern that he can't play 5 single games before he can join a teamgame, then I say we can live witout him here.
if he just want to play with his friends... well do so, in single games, why do people HAVE to play with eachother the first game? play single game together, without alliances ofcourse... you can learn eachother that way too.
I could say something interesting, but I wont

my first few games on this site were with my mate SWAY... They were singles and we were out to kill each other - not to join and form an alliance.

I'm not sure when I played my first game of doubles / triples - but when I joined this site - all I was used to, was playing risk as an individual player.

I'm sure that if someone new joins and all they are allowed to see are the singles games - they won't be put off.

Complete one single game (new players will no doubt join their 4 allocated game slots when they join) and then team games are available seems to be a simple and effective method of significantly reducing the DB problem.

This site not only needs to encourage new people to join - It needs to keep the existing members happy - and team games are ruined by deadbeats.

i Like this idea!!!!! and it seems to me that most people in this thread would rather see membership go down for their own "good". i mean who knows, im playin with my doubles partner who always plays, but not now, he's deadbeating. he's a private!!! what's this going to solve, a minor issue. if u dont like it, make private games, and dont be so selfish

I don't think too many people would like that solution, including myself.

gavin_sidhu wrote:Should have it that if the player was refered by a friend, the friend can play doubles with that person

Not gonna work because our Refer-A-Friend program is going to be replaced with a system where people you refer could be strangers.

strike wolf wrote:4. Even if they do deadbeat that's good for me because I always have a set partner and it makes it easier for me and my partner to win.
5. If you get screwed over by a deadbeat partner, that's your fault for not bringing your own partner in.

Wolf, you just highlighted the reasons we need to restrict team games! It is BAD that people can't safely jump into a team game like they do in a singles game. It is BAD that set partners climb the scoreboard faster just because they don't have to deal with deadbeats (yes, they also do well because of skill but a chunk of their score comes from teams with a deadbeat).

AndyDufresne wrote:80% of newbies deadbeating

80% of team deadbeats are newbies. You got it backwards. ;)

reverend_kyle wrote:working AI makes it hard to care as you still get to play the game

AI takes over instead of auto-kick & army transfer? That is pretty cool!

Pedronicus wrote:I'm sure that if someone new joins and all they are allowed to see are the singles games - they won't be put off.

Agreed. I bet most newbies wouldn't even know what they're missing. We can phrase it as a promotion to look forward to rather than a restriction.

I'm on my last year of college now.. my current course is AI, next period I'm gonna learn advanced AI.
after that I need to make a C exam work... maybe I could do the AI for this site?
if you want a AI and you can't make it yourself lack I might be able to do it.
but I'm not sure about how the C exam work, so I can't promise that I can do this. and if I get a better idea where I can work for a company and get paid I will do that. but if I don't figure anything else out this could be an idea to think of.

when someone deadbeat the AI kicks in and makes the moves for the player in the future. if the AI wins the points gets lost, but if the AI loses the deadbeated player loses his points..
I could say something interesting, but I wont

ok, one last idea: what if the New Recruits could only play doubles and triples with other new recruits??? that way they aren't ruining anybody now that's complaining and once they're done with their 5 games or whatever, then they're free to play with others...

yes, there are flaws in this, but it's a good idea when you get down to it

Really guys? A rule that you have to wait until you complete one singles game before you can play a team game would make you leave the site?

That said, I'm personally in favor of everyone waiting until they complete five games. If, as lack points out, 80% of team deadbeats are noobs, then there is no doubt which guys are causing the trouble. Yes, some number of good noobs must wait 5 games to join the team comps, but almost all of the non-playing noobs are weeded out AND the hundreds of already committed players are much happier!

This is a win-win if I've ever seen one.

CADETS ON 'P' PLATES "provisional driver plates"

Post by AussieLighthorse »

Im getting really sick of 'cadets' signing up for 'team ' games when they dont understand how to play a standard game and then they just miss turns and completely stuff up a game.
Could there not be the priviso that 'cadets' cannot play team games and can they not be advixed to communicate throught the team game chat room.....its a fairly basic requirment for a "TEAM"

Team Games Be Hidden From New Recruits

Post by tals »

Can't find the original linky - todo list is pointing to the wrong one. So I start th ethread anew.

The only problem I have with this, if it is hidden I would still like the option for a new player to join a team game. I'm playing with a friend - if it wasn't for teh fact we are teaming up he probably wouldn't be in. So as a useful recruiting mechanism it is good.

That said generally random new recruits are a definite no go in team games.

Perhaps it could be an option to invite in noobs to private team games then?

I think as long as it is hidden from the join a game list that pretty much covers it. The other areas I would guess (Lack able to check?) the new players wouldn't tend to venture.

So game finder would be the place to draw your buddy in :)

That would allow noobs to circumvent the restriction if they went to the game finder page. I personally think hidden from the join a game page, and only accessible if invited to a private team game is the way to go, but nothing's been worked out for this yet as far as I know.

All we're trying to achieve I think is stop a new player hitting join a game and accidentally ending in a game he doesn't understand. If he works out the game finder he knows where he is heading. Per sec nothing wrong with a new player playing a team game as long as he doesn't dead beat. Maybe we need a poll to understand why dead beats ... well ... dead beat :)

A good number of noobs go through the game finder page to join though. I know this because before it was changed to where you could join from the game finder, I had several questions a week from noobs on why they couldn't join games (from there). We know why noobs deadbeat, it's just a matter of fixing it, which we're working on.

I agree with you wicked - we don't need to hide private team games from newbies, only public team games

i think that a better idea than hiding the games, would be just to have a friendly message urging the player that one must complete 5 single player games to have entrance into team games. If you make this like an award, then players will strive to achieve it, kinda like becoming a colonel. Then, after eagerly playing and finishing 5 games, the new recruit will play a team game with renewed enthusiasm..

at least, that is how i would see it.

Perhaps an optional practice area(no points to gain or lose) can be set up for new recruits to familiarize themselves with the game dynamics before they jump into rated game. Then they may not be so quick to bail if they feel less pressure....or not.

Just an idea, though may also solve people setting up multi's to practice against themselves.
