The End of Conquer Club

Post by lanyards »

Will CC be around forever? Or will it eventually slow down and then loose all interest?

I think CC will be around untill Lack is unable to run the site anymore. But he could hand it down to someone else. What do you guys think?

there are 23,000 members. Lets say 10,000 of them are premium. Premium cost $25/year. That means that lack is making about $25,000/year off CC, that's not including merchandise. Pretty soon he will be able to make a living off running this site alone, if he doesn't already. I don't see any reason why he would stop doing this. If anything I think that he would continue to put more time into it.

He quite his job a while ago so he could spend more time on CC I think. But he would eventually have to retire, or hand it over to someone else, right?

You forgot a zero. 10,000 X 25 = 250,000

I played Risk in High School over 43 years ago and it is still around. I suspect that Conquer Club will last so long as the monotelscable don't screw the internet to the wall with a closed network strategy.

Hasbro never minded MSN hosting Risk and that was very high profile and a complete duplication of the game complete with logos and maps. It was MSN that decided to get outta on-line strategy games. I doubt they could ever give a hoot about CC, small potatoes and no advertising revenue.

I dont know, maybe someone else does. Have they ever had an issue? Im sure if it went as far as court (which it never would, CC would have to concede before then) CC would lose easily. As its quite obv its a blatent knockoff.

They recently shut down "Scrabulous" rather easily without even a fight. Im sure once the produce a free RISK game that is comparable, they will shut this site down.

Its just the sad truth.

You know, now that you mention it king, eventually, when the site gets big enough and has enough money, lack probably will have to come to some kind of agreement with hasbro. I guess right now the lawsuit wouldn't be worth the potential gain for them, but one day they will probably raise the issue, when the site's netting 100 million a year.

The site won't ever net 10,000,000 a year unless you account massive inflation into the picture...

That would be 4 million premium users a year. I don't think so.

Honestly, I just think this site is "flying under the radar" and no one at HASBRO has seen it yet. If you google search "risk" it doesnt come up for many pages.

Once they see it, and create a very similar game, they will most likely shut down this site.

Scrabulous was barely making any money and had like 50 million users and it was shut down.

All HASBRO would have to do is file a copyright suit, or better yet just threaten to do so and this site would have no choice but to shut down.

If Hasbro is smart, they would buy the site and keep it running -- just put logos on everything. Besides this isn't risk, its conquer.

But if you google "online RISK" it's right near the top of the first page. ;)

I found this site by searching for "free online risk."

Need to throw some Google AdSense up on this site. Minus the Classic map, I can't imagine Hasbro having too many issues with this game.

The Classic map on Conquer Club isn't the same as the one Hasbro. Well, atleast not exactly the same. In the Conquer Club Classic Map, East Africa borders Middle East, the Hasbro Classic Map does not. The maps have different graphics, so if other risk websites can get away with stealing our maps and having the same graphics, how can CC get in trouble when it has different graphics and slightly different gameplay?

where do you get your info? scarbulous is not dead, it is up and running and i'm still a member. i was just playing a game before i came over here to check my games. so, wrong about that... hasbro knows about this site, and if the classic map were removed, they would have zero ground to stand on. hell, even that map isn't the same as hasbro. the rules and gameplay are different, and the maps on this site are wholly original. i love all the speculation and "facts" that people use that are just not true...-0

I think Hasbro would have a major issue with the self designed maps on here. Say they took over the site. What woudl stop them from mass producing DiM's age of merchants map as a board game? Would DiM get paid? the answer is no. If cc is bought or taken over, all the maps developed by the gamers would likely disappear, or they would be forced to sign over all rights to them.

HAsbro knows this is out there. Believe me. Nothing is "too small" for corporations in protecting trademarks. By NOT protecting them, you actually weaken you rights.
