Communication with you team is paramount.- discuss a plan for action and try not to deviate from it. Follow these simple steps and whalah, wins should start to flow. Good luck!

i agree, communicate your intended moves, make suggestion and most of all LISTEN to what others ideas are.

Communicate, and co-ordinate.

Team Game Strategy

Post by TaCktiX »

I suppose I've just been joining the wrong games (ones with too many high-ranked), but I still don't get how to approach team games. Could anyone give me a general outline of what I need to do?

about talking

Post by vsmith »

I am the same way, a nube, and I want to play fair... is this talking between team members supposed to stay in the game chat where everyone can see it, or is it OK for "team" members, as in doubles or triples, to communicate thru "pm" messages to determine strategy? in today's warfare, the ability to communicate secretly with your allies is an integral part of winning... just saying "talk" doesn't help me a bit...

The way SkyT used to do it was to get all his friends together on the same PC and take each others turns.I dunno if he still does..You'll have to ask JR.

the default setting for the chat in team games is "team only" so no need to use PMs, just chat in the game to your team only.

any kind of communication is allowed, as long as you two are on the same team.

Go for a continent, prevent the other team from getting a continent, get good rolls, better cards (if playing with cards) and keep your teammates alive. Fortify a lot.

The bonuses your teammates have are just as important as your own. If your teammate is going to be broken, try helping him out by attacking the opposing army that would be attacking him next turn. If you just deploy on your friend, you dont get a card and the other team still has a big army. Try attacking your opponent and making it so he can't hurt your team.

First off, know the rules. Since you weren't aware of the chat function, I'm not assuming that you do know them. So, I'm taking no knowledge for granted including the fact that only one of you not both must own all spots in a bonus area for you to get it.

Now, as for strategy...

Don't think of it as a team game, think of a 3 team game as a 3 player game, a 2 team as a two player, etc. Of course there are wrinkles, like the fact that if both you and your partners armies were one team, you'd be able to fortify differently and, more importantly, if one of you gets axed, that sort of matters (though I have won a team game when my partner was the 1st guy taken out).

Pay attention to the order of play. Sometimes it makes sense for each of you to deploy on the other. For instance, if you go right before a guy who is poised to bust your teammates bonus and he goes before a guy who is poised to do the same to you, it makes more sense for each of you to deploy on each other rather than yourselves to defend such attacks. This goes back to pretending that you're just one player.

Make sure you have each other's login password so you can take each others turns if needed. This is not cheating since you're on the same team. Just don't abuse this knowledge in non-team games you both might be in.

If at all possible, take adjoining bonus areas to minimize the borders you have to defend. It's even worth one of you going for a continent that you need to work harder for, especially on large maps like World 2.0 where the games tend to take longer. Over time, the advantage of holding adjoining areas will pay off. My regular partner and I almost always go for North America and South America in World 2. That's a lot of bonus armies that you only need 5 points to defend. Compared to a team that's got, say Europe and Oceania, that's a huge advantage. Those two each take 4 all by themselves despite not earning much more.

Team Games

Post by gobruinss »

I've wanted to join a team game, but without knowing any specific strategy inherent in that type of game, I am reluctant to do so. The last thing I want to do is cause someone else to lose points because of my stupidity. I looked in past posts and have seen nothing on team games.

Are there any cardinal strategy points that you should always follow?

thanks.

coordination is the key. you should communicate effectively with your team mate(s) and get their AIM or MSN if you can. In freestyle games you should take your turns at the same time and always make it clear where fortifications are needed. Plan every move TOGETHER. a well coordinated team will beat an uncoordinated team every time.

See if you can find some high ranking teamplayer to join with regularly, if you're willing to learn they should be more than happy to teach you and gain some points in the process.

communication is the #1 thing in team games. and look for a partner with experience that can show you some of the nuances.-0

I prefer the SkyT method. Use 3 accounts and join triples knowing that you will be making moves for all 3 players.

As stated, coordination is the key.

In sequential games then keep in mind to usually attack the one on the opposing team who is next in line to take his turn.

good point about over extending.

I have had singles games where I thought I was in good position to take someone out gotten bad dice and screwed myself.

If you take a bous or wish to take someone out make sure you dont leave yourself weak for someone to clean up on you right back. Patiance has never been my strong suite so it takes some discipline.
