I was hoping the Iraqi justice system would be free of all that bureacratic garbage.

*sigh*

Ole' George will be drinkin' some moonshine with his "pappy" tonight. Maybe he can get the rope to go along with the gun in his collection of Saddam memorabilia.

Of course there was also the abscence of the "fair trial" thing as well...

I'm all for giving EVERYONE a fair trial... but two? or three? or more?

I think he only got convicted for the massacre of about 150-odd Shiite. Aren't there still other criminal charges to brought too, even without any appeal for this particular one?

I'd normally be opposed to the death penalty, but I reckon in this case his death wouldn't do any harm in Iraq as it is.

the article wrote:The death sentences automatically go to a nine-judge appeals panel, which has unlimited time to review the case. If the verdicts and sentences are upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.

I don't like the sound of "unlimited time", but I guess this guarantees he only gets one appeal.

they're going to immediatly begin the next trial, for the next charge, that way if he wins his appeals, they've already begun the trial for the next charge. however, when his appeal fails, they'll immediatly drop the other trial(s) and kill him.

I just skipped to the end of this thread because he should have just been sentenced to life with cruel and unusual punishment. The worse they can find really. Death is a victory for him really.

although there is a faction of Iraqis who still support Saddam, most have recognized that it is good that he is no longer in power, showed by celebration in the streets as soon as the curfew had ended

give him the death penalty, great idea.

it's like spanking your child because he hit someone... just beat him for it, that will teach him not to hit... ?

iraq is attempting to stand on it's own, under the power of a new govt, and stop the violence... soooo, let's hang saddam in the city square! hell, why not stone him to death, that will prove a point!

seems to be a flaw in that reasoning, to me.

He'll die a "martyr" and it will be a victory as far as terrorists are concerned.

I consider anyone who commits genocide as a terrorist. As far as dieing a martyr goes, whether he believes it or others believe it, that's how it is. He dies during a "holy war" the extremists will consider him a martyr.

i really hope you realise that SECULAR saddam, and SECULAR communists would be at odds with RELIGIOUS FANATICS who are blowing themselves up in crowded places throughout Iraq right now since we have no idea what we're doing.

Interesting point: Mussolini eradicated the sicilian Mafia, after the war American Soldiers mistook them for political prisoners and freed them. Locals know how to govern themselves best. We can't put in puppet governments and expect it to function efficiently and fairly.
