No, it's never been played, I suppose I could print it and rally a group of buddies but seems impractical and inefficient versus testing it here on the site.

youve got western europe listed as having a bonus of 3 on the map, but 4 on the xml, giving europe a total bonus of 12
- <continent>
<name>Western Europe</name>
<bonus>4</bonus>
- <components>
<component>British Isles</component>
<component>Iberia</component>
<component>France</component>
<component>Italy</component>
<component>Germany</component>
<component>Poland</component>
</components>
</continent>

also, the colour box next to "the horn" on the key appears to be a different colour then the actual subcontinent. the same goes for the "europe (total)" box.

and i was wondering, if someone takes over antartica, is "[...] receives 0 armies for holding Antartica" going to show up on the record?
<continent>
<name>Antarctica</name>
<bonus>0</bonus>
just a rather pointless sidenote.

Enigma, thanks for the catch on Western Europe, I've corrected it in the version linked below.

http://www.zims.com/blog/images/wmapxml2.xml

I'll likely remove the Antarctica from the final version as well. I put them into a continent as Jota's XML checker (all hail Jota!) kept giving me a warning that the territories weren't part of a continent.

On the colours I'll double check them when I make any other last edits. Thanks for the catches.

Gavin, it really was just a judgment call. I don't think their being connected or unconnected really will have a material impact on how the game is played and given that, I thought the isolated islands approach was more interesting.

If you think they should be connected for a playability, historic or geographic reason let me know your thinking and I'll reconsider.

I just dont like territories with only one border, it isnt in the classic map, it shouldnt be in other maps. You cant do that for all cases, however, cant logically connect Sri Lanka anywhere, but yo ucould fix up places like Japan by connecting it to Taiwan (historically correct, Taiwan was part of Japan for a while), Madagascar by connecting to Tanzania and Caribbean to Southern US.

I like what you did with Taiwan with that border thing, could you do it with cuba and or carribbean?

I am astounded by this map, I was a skeptic early on, but you've done an excellent job. Well done, I can't wait to play. :D :)

I see your point about the one way borders, and I'd be fine with a Japan - Taiwan connection, as it doesn't really hurt the continent and could make sense geographically.

As for the Madagascar - Tanzania connection as an added one, I could see that also. Again, it makes sense geographically

The Caribbean - Southern USA...seems like a stretch though, both literally on the map and not.

And unfortunately, I still like the idea of the removal of the connection between Greenland and Nunavut, though it makes sense geographically, not so much strategically, but just my opinion. ;)

Hopefully I'll have time to do another in depth review again of gameplay, and look closer into it all. Others are welcome to do it also, since the more help this map can get, the better and better it will be. Once that is done, perhaps I put this into final forge, and look into more visual things.

I say just make what you have on page 19. I'll play it and so will the rest of the JC Warriors.

Not sure what you mean. I understand the Cuba - Southern USA route, but attaching the 'Caribbean' to Southern USA seems slightly odd.

Gavin,

I've joined Taiwan/Japan and New Caledonia/New Zealand as per your suggestion. Let's split the difference and leave Madagascar and Cuba as single routes?

On doing the border thing like Taiwan with Caribbean/Cuba not sure what you're suggesting. I put the half circle around Taiwan to make it clearer that it was part of Far East. Cuba and Caribbean are not part of Mexico nor the US. Do you want me to put an opposite direction half circle showing they are not connected?

Andy,

On the islands see my proposed compromise above.

On the Nunavut/Greenland I'd prefer to leave them connected given the geography though I recognize it would improve the Canadian sub to put up an 'ice wall' or something ;)

Looking forward to your deep dive on playability. And for your esthetic insights.

Cheers,

Zim

I dont care about this map, but a thing I always thought was terrible and no one comments about is that mini-map with countries lacking... It fucking strange... Isnt there a way to put non subs countries there, just the borders maybe, without colours?

I have to disagree, I think the mini-map and how it is currently set up makes it very clear what does and what doesn't belong in the sub-conts, it'll quicken gameplay.

i agree, keep madagascar as a single connection. and did you mean caribbean instead of cuba? because cuba is already connected to southern usa. i would also agree bout caribbean however, its to far away.

Well, it looks like there is less and less I can find questionable about gameplay. A quick overview...I could consider giving the Far East a bonus of 3 instead of 4....perhaps bumping both USA and Canada up each one...but those are the only few ideas that popped up gameplay wise.

Now for the long visual appeal evaluation...I'll start with the colors.

  • North America
--I'd consider perhaps altering Mexico's color to that of something maybe of a darker purple...or with a tint of blue, just to give it a little color room away from Canada's.

--Also...is part of Alaska missing on the right hand of the map, near Russia?
  • South America
--I think its colors are nearly spot on.
  • Europe
--Colors are looking alright, though I'd consider making the 'Non's a little less of a vibrant green...not so bright.
  • Africa
--Colors here are also relatively fine.
  • Asia
--I'd consider revising the color of the 'Nons' here also. Perhaps giving it a slightly grayish tint...just to make sure you can tell the Siam area from the ocean.

--I'd also consider revising the color of the Far East...perhaps a darker or navy blue to differentiate between it and the Middle East.
  • Oceania
--Colors are pretty well off here, perhaps a small tweak to the 'Nons'.

--Australia's yellow is very bright, perhaps a slightly golden/subdued yellow would be better.
  • Antarctica
--Dandy, might throw in a darker country just to spice it up, but fine without one.

As for the placement of names and army shadow circles looking on the LARGE MAP...

  • North America
    • Nunavut--Consider moving the circle to the right (or up) more, and moving the name up slightly so it is clearer.
    • Upper Canada--Perhaps flip flop the name and the circle here.
    • Lower Canada--Eh...flip flop again...
    • Southern Usa--Consider switching the circle and the name. Have the name where the circle is now, so you can fit it all, and you can have the circle on the right...perhaps up a little more in the open space.
    • Panama--Move the name slightly up, just so it doesn't touch part of SA.

  • South America
    • Bolivia--Perhaps a little move of the circle up and left, and changing the name to black instead of white.
    • Paraguay--I'm not sure how this would look, but consider making the 'guay' part of the name black in the ocean...or somehow making the whole name clear.

  • Europe
    • Germany--Perhaps black name instead of white
    • Poland--Be careful about the 'nd' being obscured by the border line.
    • Sweden & Finland--Are their circles overlapping? Perhaps look into giving all the Scandinavia circles a little more space and room.

  • Africa
    • Mauritania--Move it slightly away from the coast so all letters are clear.
    • Chad--Be careful about the 'd' being obscured by the border.
    • Somalia--Move it completely into the ocean so the 'S' can be read.
    • Kenya--Perhaps look into moving the name into the ocean as above...perhaps with a directing line.

  • Asia
    • Turkmenistan--Watch the name being hard to read to the border in the middle of it.
    • Afghanistan--'Af' part is hard to read...perhaps other also. Look and see if black is better than white, or if to keep it the same.
    • Turkey--Watch the 'y' in Turkey, don't want it lost.
    • Iran--Perhaps move the name slightly away from the its circle, so as not to touch it.
    • Korea--Perhaps move the name north of the country.
    • India--Be careful about the 'I' and the border.
    • Thailand--Consider moving the name slightly away from the circle.

  • Oceania
    • Java--Maybe move the name away from the circle slightly.
    • New Caledonia--Watch the overlapping of the circle and the name, perhaps move the name north a little.
    • Western Australia--Try not to have the circle over lap the name, consider moving the circle further north.
    • Central Australia--Be careful about the 'A' being hard to read, maybe a nudge north.
    • New South Wales--Not sure what you can do here, but try to keep 'Wales' from being obscured by the borders. Perhaps flip flop the name and circle, or nudge the circle further north and the name up a little.
    • New Zealand--Perhaps move the name a little further from the circle.

  • "To Such and such"
    • Each "To ... " place, consider making those a bold font...just so they don't get lost in the chaos of the country names.

Regarding the SMALL MAP, if you can...attempt to have the things you'd like to change from the above list...in it also.

What hinders the small map the most, has to be the size of the country names. If at all possible, look into tweaking their size to slightly larger or bolder.

======================

Phewfta....
