Re: High ranked players = true wimps
Hear, Hear!!! Well said. This is not a socialst/communist state where everyone should be equal (except for the party hacks which are more equal then everybody else) These people used their time/energy to achieve what they have and they have the right to chose when/how/who they game with.
I think most of the complaints come from people that have POINTS ENVY
I personally don't care about the points.......I'm just here to enjoy the game program.

Personally only like to play 6-8 player, standard, flat rate / no cards, sequential. If this means that I am going to struggle to get to the top of the rankings then so be it, it is my choice. I don't have a right to force that choice on other people.
Agree with your sentiment that other's game choice is a matter for them, and the important thing is that the player is enjoying himself/herself...
However, thought I'd just make a couple of points:
1) Original rules of risk are actually escalating cards
2) Whilst there is probably some element of rank protection in playing private games, I know for myself and the majority of high rankers who I know and play with, the main reason for playing private games against fellow high ranks is for the competition... I know there is not going to be an easy win and you have to work hard and be at your best to win games. So to me it is more enjoyable to play competitive games against high ranking players than to play against players who perhaps do not yet have as sophisticated a strategy.
Think of it in terms of sporting analogies - you have some sporting leagues which are mainly social, players of all sorts of mixed abilities play in them because they enjoy mixing - these are like the public standard games you play in, a good choice if you enjoy it... other sporting leagues are streamed by ability*, so top Premier League teams do not play against your local park football team - for those who love the challenge it is their game choice.
So to be honest I would guess for most players private games are played first for the competition and second to reduce rank fluctuations... for each player the mix of motivations will be different.
*I know that rank does not directly correlate to ability - but it is fair to say there are a higher number of skilful players in the higher ranks than at other rank levels

1/ Sorry you are indeed correct, I should know this as I have the original wooden box version on my shelf. The set card rules were not introduced until later and an option I believe.
2/ I think this actually proves the point I was making, I totally agree and understand that playing with equally high ranked players makes for a better, more strategic game. What is interesting though, my research showed that high ranking players have no problem playing 'public' games but only when the odds are stacked in their favour. I seems that most high ranking player have the stategy of only playing 6-8 player standard game formats in leagues or private but they then have a 'banker' game format that they use when they play the public. This is generally either small games, speed freestyle games or triples and doubles with the same team mates. These games are used to bolster rankings points.
Again I must underline that fact that I don't have an issue with this, the ranks system is the way it is and people have ever right to play the way they want. I will also say and the majority, if not all of the high ranking players deserve to be there on there skills, you cant get rank without being a good player. I just believe that there are as many equally good player in midtable, purely because they have no interest in playing the system.

Re: High ranked players = true wimps
Its easy enough to see who maintains rank by playing lots of games against lower ranks, just check the win percentages. Anybody near the top of the scoreboard with less than 40% clearly isnt playing a heap of 1 v 1 or team games against noobs,
Re: High ranked players = true wimps
I open all my games public... Feel free to join any of them. Usually 8 man games unless the map says other wise. IE small maps. Terminator and Standard games usually. Search my name for waiting games and join a few if you like. Open to all Cooks to Conquer. In fact one player who joins quite a few of my games is a 350 point cook. On the other hand I get higher ranking players as well joining my games.

i wouldn't say 40%
for example i have 50% but i don't play team games or 1v1 vs noobs.
most of my games are 6-8p public or 1v1 public.

the other side is
why do you high rankers steal points from the low ranker
just can't win lol

Yep, that's the point I was making in the thread where somebody accused high ranking players of being afraid of each other. All the haters need to get together and get their story straight.

Re: High ranked players = true wimps
It seems as though every time a playier reaches captain (ie rowdyruffboy), they think they are above everyone else and can bully weaker players. It's a shame that people have to be that way, but I guess it's tough to change.
Re:
2000 isn't high ranked? Do the math. At this moment, 2000 is good for 626th place on the scoreboard. In the last 30 days, 21,350 people have played at least one game. That means 2000 pts puts you into the 97th percentile. That not only makes a person high ranked, it puts them among the sites elite players. My current total of 1530 pts is good for 2,636th place on the scoreboard. Nothing to brag about. It does however put me into the 88th percentile. I would have to say that I am not ashamed to have a higher score than 88% of the players on this site.
Blitzaholic wrote:I would not consider 2000 high ranked, perhaps 2500 to 3000 is or higher.
Some players worked very hard to achieve the goals they set out to establish. So, for some, they rather play with higher ranks, or private games, and some are open to the public. I hear what you are saying, but it is each players individual right to play as they choose as long as it is following CC guidelines.
Respects, Blitz
Perhaps, when others will get to know you more through experience and open up some games for you, sometimes it just takes time, be patient. You do well and move up, i am quite sure you will get players playing you, most always happens. Hope this was helpful, peace.

I don't see how a high ranked player only wanting to play high ranked players is wrong. A high ranked player striving to beat the best seems more logical and more difficult! Plus, noobs can really screw up standard games!

Re: High ranked players = true wimps
I play games with whomever.
If I play a low ranked player and that player plays poorly, screws the game up, and makes it a game of 99% luck instead of 30/70 luck/skill which it is with high ranked player who know how to play, then; I leave that shitty player negative feedback and I ignore them so I dont have to deal with that crappy player again. Take for example: Game 2224408 where chubby checker killed 7 of my units in the northern bonus area. Isolating me to 2 territories and killing 50% of my units. I will never play with that fool again now and he will get negative feedback (and I believe neg FB is deserved for bad playing, although neutral can be chosen instead)
Even players of 1500-2200 still dont know how to play escalating skillfully, hence as Blitz said on page 1 elite players like to play with equivelents because they know the game will be good, well played, and not chubby idiot is going to screw things up.
I think I have in excess of 50 crappy players blocked. 2 of them are over 1800 points most are below 1000 and consistently stay around 1000. My goal is not to avoid lower ranks, my goal is to have a good game where the winner earned it, whoever it is that wins.
