When I heard about the latest US college shotting on the news this morning, the 1st thing I thought was:
"Well, I bet my hat there will be at least 2 threads on US gun laws in I.K by tonight"
Oh look, I was right! Hey, it's good to know that you lot watch the news now and then, but try and be a tad more unpredictable next time. Kay? It makes life that much more interesting.

Onto my other point, I had my 5th driving lesson this morning and I'm happy to announce that I can successfully initiate a 3-point turn without cocking it up. For those CCers who do drive, any tips for a fledging motorist?
And for those that don't, are you considering driving in the future?

For driving, you'll hardly ever use a 3 pt turn to back up, most people just turn around in a drive way or parking lot.

Parallel parking is generally useless unless you live in a city. Once you get to college, unless you are commuting, you won't be driving for months at a time.

Definitely for me the most difficult part of driving is parallel parking.

My most earnest advice for you is this: DON'T SPEED. When you go fast, you use MUCH more fuel than at reasonable speeds. Also, it's so dangerous, so very dangerous. Let the people behind you get pissed that you're going too slow--that's their problem, it's your life.

I wish I could help you but I still don't have my license (not because I can't because of choice). I usually just bike.

Actually speeding doesn't take up gas, accelerating does.

I exaggerate of course, but if you slowly build up to 80 mph, you burn less fuel than if you floor it and shoot up to 60. Look at the rpm meter, the higher it is the more gas you're burning.

Also, no one uses 3 point turns. However, in my driving "test" all I did was back along the curb and do a 3 point turn, and the cop just signed my sheet and I was lisenced. If you live in the US and are just getting you're lisence now though, I feel bad for you - I hear the new civilian inspectors are a bitch.

I can do 3 point turns but I messed up and had to make it 5 points on the driver's ed. test (for the class, not the license). And I'm too lazy to rack up 50 hours so I'm waiting til I turn 18 to get my license.

Going fast != dangerous driving. The lazy, fat wankers who don't pay attention to what is going on around them = dangerous. But you need EXPERIENCE in driving fast before you do it. Thus, don't get in the habit. But for STREET driving, I only have some tips:

Pay attention to the traffic pattern around you. Keep up with the rest of the traffic, while maintaining safe distances between the car in front of you.

Don't fucking tailgate you punk. The rule of thumb is usually, for each 10mph you are traveling, keep at least 1 car behind the car in front of you. So, for example, if you're traveling at highway speed (65mph in the states), keep about 7 cars length between you and the car in front of you. Why is this? Safe breaking AND the reaction to the need to break.

Have respect for the local traffic laws. Follow the speed limit.

Don't block intersections during traffic jams. don't block drive ways/turn offs during traffic jams. Seriously. You may got honked at, but ignore those fat tossers. When/if someone wants to turn onto the road from those drive ways, be kind and yield them the right of way. It's only being nice.

Don't race yellows/try and beat red lights. Trust me. I was t-boned by some dumb blonde who was racing a red light. Totaled my car at the time.

Always be aware of the other drivers around you. I cant stress this enough. Not everyone is going to be so kind as you are, and use their lights to signal lane changes and such. Always be ready to break if someone pulls out in front of you.

Some good tips for you, buddy. Again, don't fucking tailgate. rawr.

My dad has it in droves, and get annoyed at the slightest provercation.

In case you find yourself actually needing to parallel park.....( like with a car waiting behind you in traffic, and the only spot is beside you ) try this:

1) pull up even with the car in front of the empty spot.
2)crank your wheels towards the car you're beside.
3) back up slowly, until your outside rear-view mirror is even with the end of the car you're beside.
4) at that point, turn your wheels all the way in the opposite direction, and continue backing into the spot.
5) You should now only have to straighten your wheels, and pull ahead slightly to be perfectly parked.
6) pat yerself on the back.
