Auto Refresh Customization

Post by thejackofhearts »

Official Suggestion wrote:Concise description:
  • Allow users to customize the instances when they use auto refresh

Specifics/Details:
  • All times // Off
  • Casual Freestyle // Speed Freestyle // All Casual // All Speed // Only Custom Selected Games (link to select games)
  • Set time between refresh : 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 seconds
  • Refresh Action Selections: Yes // No

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Less complaints about "Auto-refresh messed up my game!!" or "Why doesn't this auto-refresh?"

Mod Note: All suggestions that would be solved by this suggestion, including ones simply about auto refresh, have been merged here and should continue to be merged here since there are many customizations available.

How often would this refresh be done? I'm just wondering, since I guess lack's already come up with a system, but after every roll of the dice seems a bit unnecessary, don't it?

Probably every 10 secs. you will be able to watch other people play without hitting refresh. it will be quick, powered by ajax technology 8)

If you're gonna use ajax, there's no need for the whole page to refresh, just certain sections of the page. This would make the game chat closer to "live" :)

ps i've use the Live Chat. Definitely not as good as "live" game chat would be.

Hey Lack --

You're probably already aware of this, but I'll just throw this out there.

When you're working on this, I'd suggest you take a look at comet / "reverse ajax". I tried to use it (I'm using DWR for my AJAX in LandGrab), but DWR's reverse ajax was still beta and didn't work very well when I was doing the realtime board. Currently LandGrab uses ajax with a 5 second poll. I tried to keep the packet size as small as possible, but it's still a noticeable bandwidth chunk when 20 users are all watching a realtime board. Hence, when you're doing this for CC, I'd strongly recommend not using a poll method .. I think comet / reverse ajax should be fairly stable by 2007.

Just my $ .02
