I think he does as anyone who has access to a newspaper will tell you that the military have led a coup in Thailand to overthrow the Thai government, and succeded. Go to a news website and look it up for yourself

I really have no opinion. It's not that I support one side or the other, but I just don't give a f*ck.

I'm in south east asia right now, Wishing I was there.

It will be very interesting to see it unfold over the next few weeks, especially with the promise to re-instate a new PM within 2 weeks.

Interesting that the military gets to choose who will be PM for the next year AND gets to choose who will write the new constitution - while it might not be a military leader in power, it will be a militarily backed government that takes power.

anyhoo, very interesting time in SEA and thailand right now - one of the most stable governments getting overthrown, who saw that one coming just 2 months ago?

My only question about the whole thing is whether the military did this on their own or if they were acting on a general desire by the citizenry. How do the citizens feel?

Something to think about:

The prime minister that the military ousted was democratically elected by the Thai people. Good or bad...why didnt they just vote him out at the next election instead of taking over the country in a coup?

The majority of Americans dont like Bush at the moment, but we wouldnt jeopardize our election process and stability by tossing him out with military force!

It just sounds strange to me. More to the story I am sure.

SEA like South East Asia

Backglass, the prime minister that was widely accused of rigging the elections to stay in power - this coup is specifically because of the corruption of the government and prime minister (or so they say)

vtmarik, the general picture I'm getting from thailand right now is that people do in fact generally support the move. The people in bangkok didn't exactly like the old PM so they are taking pictures infront of tanks, bringing food to the soldiers etc.

It seems to be a rather peaceful coup as far as they go, so there must not be too many people who oppose it.
<shrug>

We will see how serious the general is in 2 weeks after he appoints the new power base and the experts plough through their backgrounds and political leanings and ties

i can see it now...
the (former)prime minister of thailand goes up in front of the u.n. and starts saying "I am the prime minister of" just then he is interupted by one of his fellow government guys who goes up and whispers in his ear that he is no longer in power. then he walks off of the podium with his head hung low.... funny, kinda
