But yeah, I'd suggest e-mailing Tor (I think they have the copyright anyway.) As I said, there have been a number of games; everything from a MUD to a horrible failure of what amounted to a Doom remake if I remember correctly.

Even an anime loosely based on it (very few similarities, but not bad by itself).

But the 12th book should be coming out in 2008 sometime. RJ talked it over with his family, gave them his notes, and it should be published before to long.

Dragon, you dissapoint me, read The Knife of Dreams, great book.

ahhh sorry u feel differently. but i am not the only one who felt that way. i got 4 other friends hooked onto this series and quite honestly, we all came to the same conclusion. the series was originally only suppose to be 4 books. it was great through 6 but it got seriously wack afterwards. some people needed to die. some storylines were utterly useless and led nowhere and none of the MAIN good characters ever died which pissed me off to no end. its still a great series but it could have been so much more.

try reading "A song of Fire and Ice" by George Martin.

already read it and i did like it a lot. but the pace of the book did pick up considerably in that book which wasn't the case for his few previous ones.

i plan on reading the final book if it ever comes out. this is the series that started the fantasy scifi hunger for me. i'll always be eternally grateful to RJ for this series...

Tar Valon (a city from The Wheel of Time series)

Post by InkL0sed »

Please vote in the poll, if nothing else. I need to know how this map is being received.

Ok, so I'm giving a shot at Tar Valon, from the late Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time. Yes, I know there are copyright issues. I will deal with them if this map really gets serious.

Here's the original map, next to my very first version:
ImageImage

If you looked at both maps, you can see clearly that I'm blatantly using the original to create my own. How observant of you :P

So these are my thoughts on gameplay: the territories on the walls will be Siege Towers, which will be able to attack (or maybe bombard) the villages on the same side of the river. The villages will be able to attack the harbors; the harbors will be able to attack each other. The White Tower will give a small bonus(probably +2), and be able to attack all Siege Towers. Ogier Grove may also give a small bonus. The bridges will likely be territories as well.

Latest version:
Image

Territory Count: 39

To-Do:
-Make bridges
-Consider adding more territories
-Add in all army circles
-Consider making army circles smaller, or change borders, as things are gonna start to look cluttered.
-Make two more roads
-Receive advice!

Questions:
-The roads are intended as impassables, but obviously in some places that won't be the case. How should I show where there are connections?
-What should I do to free up some space?
-How should I name the territories within the city itself?

I'd also welcome tips on graphics, as I'm completely inexperienced. I'm using Photoshop 7.0, but I also have Gimp (which I have almost no idea how to use, but am willing to try).

Big WoT fan here. Anyways...

How about you divide the territories up by which country each road leads to? That should give you a few territories, and depending on when it takes place, you could also have the rebel camp as a territory (the one with Egwene and the Aes Sedai that follow her). Just a suggestion, of course.

I was thinking, it could be The Siege of Tar Valon. I'll have to consider that for a bit.

EDIT: And with the chains blocking the harbor too  The idea is intriguing. :-k

first solve the copyright issue, otherwise you're just wasting your time. imagine working on this for a month and then getting a no regarding the copyright

Sound advice. However, despite the fact that I'm actually fairly certain I will get it, it wouldn't be a waste of time, 'cause I'll have learned so much about map-making by then :D

How does this look:

In this version, the Siege Towers would not border anything but the towns and the White Tower.

Actually, they just recently named Brandon Sanderson as the author to finish the final book using Robert Jordan's notes and audio recordings. It is scheduled for release in Fall 2009. :)

I didn't realize someone was doing a WoT map. Good thing I decided to just do Tar Valon!

Comment on my map, please?

I find forgetting about the series until the month before it comes out, then re-reading it another time before buying the final book, works well. awkward sentence, i know

Added roads (intended as impassables) and textures.
Image

I'm planning on making the Siege Towers' army circles pop out of the map, so they look like towers.

What should I do to show connections between territories that have a road between them?

interesting idea, not familiar to the wot series tho.

i have one question. do you really think having only 20 countries is a good plan? especially if you consider the fact that if a person gets the white tower from the start, they are at a great advantage in terms of blocking off possible fort routes or just dominating the game from the start
