You forgot vatican city inside rome, could be a nice variation, 1 point if you conquer it, but it only have border with the city of rome.

maybe I came too late, but I don't like too much the names "toscana ovest" "puglia settentrionale" ecc, there are some other names that are more poetic I think, for istance: "toscana est"="chiantishire" "toscana ovest"="etruria" ecc.

Or you can use the name of local wines, could be funny ...

Last map is quite good, but I think not good for orientation rotate.
You can use right proportion with north sud orientation like in the other versions.

Also you can add some decorative with monuments: coliseum Pisa tower and others.

Colors aren't so good also.

And why don't use region ...
