"préfecture names"
i started this thread and i like the idea of using the préfecture names instead of the départements. i think that would be fun too. i like both actually.
i might add: the argument for using the préfectures is that many people might not know the names of the départements... that ...

i like your map bruce. zep did say he was going to try it, but it's been weeks or a month since i've heard from him. maybe pm him. pomona also seemed interested in supporting the project.

thanks for this last. i think much of the color problems would be solved in advance by posting color samples. plus, most of any maps i'll do would probably be natural colors, with the territory and country borders being thin and thick black, as opposed to any purple or blue terrain colors. i only put an accent if there's no capital letter I in the île-de-france

in a 500 by 500 map i had no prob with the territories at 10 point font. you might need to put them in non-italic double or triple line format, like

i think it would be cool to show just the flag for each region, then in the bonus list, show the flag in miniature, the region name, then the number of bonus armies.
