What kinds of ways can someone make money without being registered as an employee? List your ideas here, and I will put them in my original post so that we have a compilation of things one can do to make money without having a job. The ideas have to be legal though. I will list a few to start us off:
-Donate bone marrow (in the US)
-Collect beer cans
-Shovelling snow
-Cutting grass
-Panhandling (more details needed)
-Sell used stuff
-Do "handy" jobs -- fix stuff, deliver stuff, etc.
-Tutor
-Help fix someone's computer
-Babysit (yep ... especially guys! If you are reasonably referenced/trustworthy a lot of parent of boys like having a male sitter.. but DO be cautious yourself!)
-Freelance .... anything. As long as you make no more than X amount in a year (in PA its $400), the income is not reported. (some big chains, etc excepted... its easier for them to just pay the taxes than to make exceptions).
-Busking (street entertaining) can make money, but in most cities you need a permit, have to stay in certain areas.
-Borrow a few thousand at very low interest, then buy a CD and hold it for 3 - 6 months. Harder to do now, but still feasible.
-Be really good at poker
-Back alley handjobs
-Be a participant in various research studies (could use a few links or ideas here)
-Collect random change from a friend or family's house that they don't want lying around anymore
-Donate sperm
-Sugardaddying.
-Modelling

Become a bum.
Seriously, it's a lot of free cash for doing absolutely nothing.

Megabeth,
Will I concur that money is not an automatic way to get sleep, time, knowledge, respect, health, life, and love, but it can serve as an indirect means to get these benefits.
*Sleep: Money can buy you medical service to cure insomnia, sleeping pills (don't get addicted), a good bed will help you sleep
*Time: The more money you make per hour, the less time you will need to make the desired sum of money.
*Knowledge: Having money can allow you access to the more credible sources- journals, human sources ie doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.
*Respect: My guess is that people will find reason to respect people with money because the people with money tend to hold the power to make decisions that will influence them.
*Health: Money can buy medicine, chiropractic services, physio, access to state of the art workout machinery, etc.
*Life: If you're healthy, you will live longer.
*Love: Money is a big factor in marriage.

You don't get paid cash for donating blood in the US, only OJ and cookies. You will get paid for donating bone marrow though.

I actually made $72 collecting all the random change at my family's house last summer. Not too shabby.

Donating sperm is however a viable method of getting money. Only problem is you can do it every three days.

It may be illegal but for the most part the cops don't care. Unless you're disturbing the peace.

I somehow doubt the big city bums all have licenses. Hell, I'd be shocked. Besides, who's going to ask him?

Yeah certainly in the big cities nobody bothers with it. When you're begging in a good area in a big city, you can earn quite a bit without problems.

You can get money for donating blood plasma in the US...
Oh, and you might be able to tutor without being employed... but it's rough. Me, I like working for programs better... more people, easier rules, easier to handle the students.

What makes it rough? If you've got a talent or an subject area that you are especially strong at, tutoring can be a fun way to make some money so long as you advertise your services.

It depends a lot on where you are. People are pretty picky any more about who they let around their kids. And, when they aren't ... you need to be careful yourself. False accusations can do as much (even more) damage than true ones.

Most tutors I've known seemed like safe people. Even if the student goes to the tutor's house, the tutor can audio record the session in case of false accusations.

That may be the quickest, easiest way to make money for some. It might be creepy but it's legal.

Audio tapes don't actually work all that well. You would be surprised at how easy it is to create something from nothing if someone wants.
Well over 99.999% of people are nice. But, we worry excessively about those few who are not.
Sadly, people now are so hypersensitive they make accusations or just plain don't let anyone they don't know well around their kids.
Did you see that whole debate over the mom who let her kid ride the subway alone? Personally, I think the over-reacting, is causing more problems than the predators.
