Not as a joke, not as funny trolling... it crosses the line between humor and sheer vulgarity. In fact, his statements seem fairly clear: he doesn't particularly care why you said it. The point is that it is, in fact, inexcuseable. (With which point I am, incidentally, inclined to agree.)
