Can someone explain to me how this works? As far as I can figure out, you need to play certain settings, as specified for each month (reunification germany for July right) and earn points. But I was recently awarded a medal for having achieved 9th place on the monthly leader scoreboard and yet I have not played a single reunification Germany game for years

You came in 9th place on the monthly leaderboard, not the monthly challenge. Those are two separate things.

I'd say there's an 80% chance of it. Contrariwise, there's a 20% chance it won't happen.
